Though they were ubiquitous in the 1980s and 1990s, slasher movies and their iconic killers have since mellowed out dramatically in the world of cinema. This means that horror fans have had to live in a world where Jason hasn’t put on the hockey mask in years, and even Freddy has laid down for one extensive nightmare. One horror movie character that’s certainly not content to rest on his laurels, however, is Chucky.
After starring in a somewhat successful 2019 reboot of the Child’s Play movie series, Chucky will soon make his way to the small screen in his own TV show on Syfy. Continuing the story of the original movies, the series promises to be cable’s most gruesome show yet. Here’s what we know about the Chucky show so far, including the plot, cast and when horror fans can expect it to hit Syfy.

Plot
The Chucky series was announced back in 2018, even before the film reboot was officially announced. Unlike that movie, though, the TV show will be in continuity with the original movies. Written by series creator Don Mancini, the 10-part show will air on Syfy. The official synopsis involves a Chucky doll finding its way to a relatively normal that’s soon rocked to its core by a string of grisly murders. These serve to expose the seedy past lurking underneath the town’s perfect exterior — problems that are only made worse by the return of Chucky’s gravest enemies. The series will also detail Chucky’s backstory, revealing how he became such a gruesome murderer.
Cast and News
Not long after the series was announced, it was revealed that Brad Dourif, the original voice actor for Chucky, would return to reprise his iconic role. Chucky will be employing several new tactics in the film, with the nature of “play time” being different in a world dominated by social media. The show will also feature excessive profanity, helping to keep the tone of the movies alive through today’s more lax television censorship standards.
The cast will see several familiar faces from the movies return, including Jennifer Tilly, who plays the doll’s loyal girlfriend Tiffany. Other returning franchise stalwarts include Alex Vincent and Christine Elise, who will reprise their roles as Andy and Kyle, respectively. Unfortunately for Chucky, however, his arch-rival from the movies, Nica Pierce, played by Fiona Dourif, the daughter of Chucky’s voice actor, will play a similar role in the TV show.
Release Date
Syfy’s series initially was meant for a 2020 release, but the shutdown of the entertainment industry due to the coronavirus pandemic saw this window of opportunity pass the network by. While the delay saw the series pushed back to a tentative 2021 release date, it finally entered production earlier this month, meaning that the not so Good Guy will be stabbing and slashing his way across the silver screen sometime soon.
Chucky stars Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Zackary Arthur, Teo Briones, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Björgvin Arnarson, Devon Sawa, Alex Vincent and Christine Elise. The series premieres on Syfy and USA Network in 2021.
