Mayans M.C. Recap & Spoilers: S3, E6, “You Can’t Pray a Lie”

AWARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Mayans M.C. Season 3, Episode 6, “You Can’t Pray a Lie,” which aired Tuesday on FX.

At the end of last week’s Mayans M.C. Ezekiel “EZ ” Reyes was shot by a Mayan attacker while stopping to get funnel cake with Gaby (Sulem Calderon) on the way home from his father’s place. “You Can’t Pray a Lie,” the latest episode of Mayans M.C., picks up with Gaby attempting to rouse EZ, who is seemingly going into shock as a result of his wounds. Soon, Gaby gets EZ to a hospital, and he’s taken away for medical assistance

From there, Mayans M.C. picks up after the opening credits with club president Bishop (Michael Irby) walking through an otherwise empty night towards an abandoned car. Inside the car, Bishop finds an overturned child’s car seat, though the vehicle’s occupants are nowhere to be found. This ends up being a nightmare, as Bishop soon gets awoken by a call telling him that EZ is in hospital, having been shot the night before.

At the hospital, Bishop finds an irate Angel (Clayton Cardenas) fighting with the Stockton crew, whose member, Flaco (Roberto Garcia), is responsible for the failed attempt on EZ’s life. Despite losing a lot of blood, EZ recovers consciousness, though his attacker is in significantly worse shape. Still, Bishop tells EZ to leave town with Gaby for the time being so as to give him time to figure out what to do. Gaby then brings EZ a change of clothes, her own still stained with blood, and the two have an awkward exchange, as she’s clearly disturbed by the events of the previous night.

Back at the Galindo estate, Marcus Álvarez (Emilio Rivera) finally reveals to Miguel (Danny Pino) that Juan Denver (Keong Sim) was killed. Miguel, annoyed that Álvarez waited to tell him the news, decides to take matters into his own hands and confronts Montserrat Palomo (Mia Maestro), who rebuffs his attempts to intimidate her.

Mayans M.C. then cuts to Coco (Richard Cabral), whose drug use and time at the Meth Mountain drug camp has caused him to start reckoning with having murdered his mother in Mayans M.C. Season 1. Coco also gets more used to the drug camp, learning that it might be a place to forget the terrible things that he’s done in his life. However, Isaac (JR Bourne) soon tells Coco that he’ll need to steal three more keys of heroin for him, threatening to harm his lover, Hope (Vanessa Gisselle), if he doesn’t comply.

After leaving the hospital, EZ returns to the Mayans M.C. clubhouse, where he’s preparing to leave town as Bishop directed. His old flame, Emily (Sarah Bolger), arrives, frantic to find out what happened to EZ and who shot him. After asking, though, Gaby opens the door to EZ’s trailer and Emily calms down and tries to justify her behavior before leaving, clearly distraught over this new turn.

Angel, though, has not left the hospital. Angry, EZ’s brother pulls his gun and storms towards Flaco’s room. Before he can get to the room, though, he finds Nestor (Gino Vento) standing guard on Álvarez’s request, as the godfather is seemingly trying to stop a full civil war from erupting within the ranks of the Mayans.

On their way out of town, EZ and Gaby stop along the side of the road so that he can call his father, Felipe Reyes (Edward James Olmos). Felipe inquires after EZ’s health following the attack, and they chat about the older man’s truck, which was wrecked in the attack, before having a heartfelt exchange, one of the first since their major falling out at the end of Mayans M.C. Season 2.

As their journey continues, EZ and Gaby end up at a small church, where they talk about his mother. He reveals that his mother’s favorite story was St. Francis of Assisi’s love of St. Clare. In order to avoid temptation, the two were forced to separate from each other for a time. After the end of the story, Gaby changes EZ’s bandage and then expresses her fears about him potentially dying. EZ reassures her that everything will end up being fine, but she doesn’t believe him. Soon, they arrive at the ocean, which Gaby had previously remarked that she’d never visited. She runs into the water while EZ watches from the beach. Afterwards, they light a fire on the beach and have sex.

Going on elsewhere in the story, though not particularly relevant to the other plots at this time, Adelita (Carla Baratta) looks for her former ward, Mini (Melany Ochoa), in a junkyard filled with abandoned children. She soon finds her in the back of a truck, her mouth covered in the paint that some of the residents have been huffing. Adelita takes Mini home with her, hinting at some unstated plan for the future.

At some point after Bishop leaves the hospital, Álvarez meets with him at the Santo Padre clubhouse. Bishop is angry about Álvarez posting people at the hospital to protect the Stockton crew, and the godfather reveals that he knows that the Santo Padre president lied to him about getting heroin from Mexico to smooth things over with the other Mayans M.C. charters. Bishop, though, is angry that Álvarez is choosing to ignore Bishop’s contributions and the work he’s put in over the years and being treated worse. There ends up being more to Bishop’s anger, though, as this is indeed the anniversary of his son’s death, and he on some level blames Álvarez for sending him to Santo Padre and the terrible things that followed. Álvarez, for his part, makes clear that he won’t tolerate what Bishop is doing for much longer, and there will be consequences if he continues to escalate things.

At the marker for his son, Aidan, Bishop laments the loss of his child. Soon after, he’s joined by his ex-wife, Antonia Pena (Alexandra Barreto). Soon, the two go to a diner, where she tells him that she’ll be moving to Scottsdale. “We never should have moved her,” she tells him, after lamenting just how bad life in Santo Padre has been for them. This ends up resulting in a fight between Bishop and Antonia, as he casts her as not having cared about Aidan. In the end, they both break down in tears, and Bishop agrees to sign papers to sell their former home — the last tie that binds them together. However, Bishop ends up getting the last word, telling Antonia that she should have died, not Aidan, which is wildly mean and devastating.

Alone at the diner, an intoxicated Bishop learns that Flaco has left the hospital. Soon, he calls Angel and gives him permission to effectively start a war with the Stockton Mayans by killing two of its members. On the drive back, the rival Mayans are indeed attacked and killed by Angel and one of his compatriots as Nestor watches from a different car. As “You Can’t Pray a Lie” ends, the Santo Padre Mayans are officially at war with the Stockton Mayans.

Created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, Mayans M.C. stars J.D. Pardo, Clayton Cardenas, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Richard Cabral, Raoul Trujillo, Danny Pino, Edward James Olmos and Emilio Rivera.
