Powerpuff Girls’ Live-Action Costume Photos Aren’t Quite as They Seem

Recent photos from the set of The CW’s upcoming Powerpuff pilot seemed to indicate that the live-action superheroes would be donning their costumes from the original animated TV series. While that may be true, it is not the full story.

The leaked photos showcase flashback scenes from the women’s teenage years, which is why they are wearing their iconic costumes. The new series, however, focuses on the girls as adults and all the baggage that comes with entering adulthood. This more mature take on the series will find the heroes donning a more casual look, which can be found below.

The photo places series stars Chloe Bennet (Blossom), Dove Cameron (Bubbles) and Yana Perrault (Buttercup) front and center. While they may have given up their older costumes, they are sticking to their signature colors from the original show. The design for the family’s house is also very reminiscent of its cartoon counterpart.

If picked up to seriesPowerpuff will take place several years after the events of the classic cartoon. It will find Blossom dealing with some unresolved trauma, Bubbles chasing fame and Buttercup trying to live an anonymous life. Also along for the ride is Professor Utonium, played by Scrubs alum Donald Faison, who, on the verge of a midlife crisis, makes an effort to reconnect with his adult daughters.

Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls premiered on Cartoon Network in 1998. It ran for six seasons and 78 episodes (which corresponds to 136 segments). The series follows three young, superpowered girls, who were created by Professor Utonium after he accidentally added Chemical X to his chemical mixture. The girls use their superpowers — including flight, superhuman strength, superhuman speed and heat vision, among others — to fight various supervillains, including Mojo Jojo, HIM and Princess Morbucks.

The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes, now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever? Based on the original Cartoon Network animated series and characters created by Craig McCracken.

Powerpuff stars Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, Donald Faison, Nicholas Podany, Tom Kenny and Robin Lively. The pilot has yet to receive a release date.
