One of the most transformative arcs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe centers around Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow. Her journey from being an agent of S.H.I.E.LD. in Iron Man 2 to finding a new family that she was willing to die for in Avengers: Endgame showed that anyone can find a home they belong to if they fight hard enough. However, the moment that her character began to change the most was in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Throughout the film, Natasha was plagued by a conflict of interest. Much like Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), she wrestled with the idea that all of the good she thought she was doing for S.H.I.E.L.D. was actually for Hydra. However, unlike Steve, this bothered Natasha because she felt that no matter how much good she thought she was doing, she still ended up working for the wrong people. Her conflict reached a breaking point in a deleted scene for the film titled “Nick Fury’s Circle.”

When Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) realized that Hydra had infiltrated his organization, he faked his own death, keeping both Rogers and Romanoff out of the loop. His apparent demise shattered Natasha, who looked up to him as a father figure, since he was the main reason she was introduced to Tony Stark and eventually the rest of the Avengers. When she found out he was alive, she was both relieved and hurt due to the secrecy surrounding his decision.

The scene, available on Disney+, showed Fury and Romanoff exchanging a few words before the film’s climax. When she confronted him about the secret he chose to keep from her, Fury replied, “I had to keep the circle small. You would have done the same.” Following a long pause, Natasha responded, “I know, that’s the problem.” What helped sell the scene was Romanoff’s micro expressions following Fury’s reply. For a moment, she appeared to hold back tears of frustration that illustrated her disgust at the life she had led for years. The scene is brief, but it signified the beginning of a change in the Avenger.
By the end of the film, Natasha decided that secrets were what got S.H.I.E.L.D. taken over by Hydra in the first place, and she knew that it was time for that to stop in the deleted scene, “Widow Reveals Her Past.” With one keystroke, both her dark past and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s were out in the open for the public to see. While this ultimately brought both positive and negative repercussions, with Zemo coming for the team in Captain America: Civil War, it also served as a fresh start for Romanoff, who planned to live the life of a hero rather than a spy.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was one of the earliest films in the MCU to take itself more seriously than its predecessors. Not only has that strategy paid off, but it is still in practice with shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. One of the best examples of that was the Black Widow’s journey from spy to Avenger. Even though they didn’t make the final cut, the deleted scenes for The Winter Soldier added more depth to her character and made her role in the film even better.
