Next-gen gaming is about to get a wildly creative action-adventure title called Kena: Bridge of Spirits. The title will follow the titular hero as she tries to locate a sacred mountain shrine. Along the way, players should expect various enemies that they will have to combat within the lush forest landscape that the game takes place in. The title felt like something completely brand new when compared to other games of a similar genre.
Most games like Kena are either beautifully animated 2D platformers like Ori and the Will of the Wisps or set in a cartoonish future like Sony’s iconic Ratchet and Clank franchise. However, a game like Kena: Bridge of Spirits hasn’t come around too often. Players hoping for other games that are akin to Kena’s tone may find it hard to come by. However, there was one forgotten gaming gem that may be able to scratch the itch.

Kameo: Elements of Power was a 2005 Xbox 360 launch title that featured an elf named Kameo. In the game, Kameo must find a way to save her family from her sister and the troll, King Thorn. To do that, she has to go on a quest to gather ten elemental warriors that she can use to defeat her enemies.
Both games occur in a vivid fantasy world where the characters have to fight and solve puzzles throughout the land. However, Kameo’s combat is more focused on the hack and slash genre, while Kena’s appeared to be a mixture of that and a third-person shooter since her staff can also double as a bow.

Both characters could also use spirits in combat. While Kena’s main goal was to help souls cross over, she also collected small creatures known as the Rot. Those tiny allies were shown to help her solve puzzles, upgrade Kena’s skills and aid in battle. On the other hand, Kameo can transform into elemental spirits, like a plant or dragon, that can defeat element-based enemies and keep combat varied.
Aside from the fantasy setting and strong female protagonists, these two titles aren’t overly similar. However, the essence of adventure, immersive environments and innovative gameplay captured the spirit of fantasy adventure games. With so few titles like that in the genre, Kameo: Elements of Power is a great way to get a taste of the style that Kena: Bridge of Spirits will have to offer.
