Gravity Falls Creator Won’t Explain the Mystery of Dipper’s Birthmark

Gravity Falls may be full of complex and intricate mysteries for fans to decipher, but show creator Alex Hirsch has a few that he would prefer to keep secret

During an interview with Inverse, Hirsch revealed one such example of a mystery that will never be revealed: the origins of Dipper Pines’ constellation birthmark. When asked about the symbolism of that birthmark and its link to a Gravity Falls episode involving aliens, Hirsch declined to answer the question directly. “Between Twitter and fan conventions, I think there is not a question that I haven’t already been asked before, meaning that if I haven’t given an answer yet, it’s because I’m keeping the secret,” he said. “I do like to leave a few things left, at least for now to the imagination of the audience. Some answers are satisfying, but sometimes answers are not as satisfying as being able to wonder about it yourself.”

As revealed in the episode “Double Dipper,” Dipper’s nickname stems from a Big Dipper-shaped birthmark on his forehead that earned him much ridicule until he started covering it up with a hat. However, his trademark hat’s pine tree insignia would gradually become another description of Dipper’s character across Gravity Falls, with series antagonist Bill Cipher often referring to him by that title during their encounters.

In the Gravity Falls series finale “Weirdmageddon,” it’s revealed by Ford Pines that this emblem was actually part of an ancient zodiac capable of defeating Bill if certain characters from across the show stood on symbols within the circle that mirrored their personal traits or clothing. Ultimately, that plan failed due to Ford and Grunkle Stan‘s unresolved sibling animosity, causing Bill to incapacitate the other characters outside of Dipper, Mabel, Stan and Ford.
