The Super-Sons Just Took Down a Sea Monster That Was Too Much for Aquaman

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Challenge of the Super Sons #9 by Peter Tomasi, Max Raynor, Luis Guerrero, and Rob Leigh, on sale now.

Challenge of the Super Sons has continued to show the comedic adventures of Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, giving us backstories that prove why, as much as they’re meant for serious futures and carrying their fathers’ mantles on, they’re still the goofy Superboy and Robin that DC fans love to see in their juvenile glee.

In Challenge of the Super Sons #9, though, things get a bit more dire as they find themselves trying to take down a rare species of sea creature that’s way too much for Aquaman.

The duo has been time-hopping with the Doom Scroll, trying to save Justice Leaguers without them knowing so that history isn’t altered. They’re stopping traps that Vandal Savage and Felix Faust laid down after gaining knowledge of the time-stream themselves, with the latest hero that needs saving being Arthur Curry.

As he travels underwater to the Hall of Justice, they infect him with the fear toxin Batman had in Tower of Babel, causing Arthur to flee to the surface in a panic attack. As they ponder what’s the trap, they get the kaiju shock of their lives as it turns out to be a leviathan called the Death Kraken. The “sea slayer” grabs Jon as he’s out in the ocean trying to figure out the debacle, leaving Damian in a frenzy as he can’t afford to lose his “sidekick” on the mission.

Sadly, Jon’s heat vision doesn’t work and Damian using the powerful hands of the Superman-mobile they’re piloting proves just as futile. They can’t budge the beast so clearly, their enemies did their due diligence. Jon realizes the squid-like creature has poisoned tips on its tentacles, so they need to act fast. Thankfully, Damian’s a genius on the fly, harnessing the toxin and placing it into an arrow. Robin shoots it into the Kraken’s eye, sending fear coursing through its veins in a brutal scene. It loosens its grip and Jon’s able to throw it to the surface.

Ironically, Aquaman and the authorities coop the distraught being up in a tank after the Atlantean king stumbles across it. What’s interesting is Arthur admits to them that while he doesn’t know where it came from, the centuries-old beast most likely would have killed him.

It’s a giant he considers worse than even the creatures from the Trench but the Atlantean king opts to take it back home to imprison, where it can be kept it safe and perhaps studied. He knows it endured a tough time and would prefer for it not to fall into the wrong hands or wander the seaways unchecked.
