Wyatt Russell has had to deal with a whole lot of fan backlash towards his character John Walker, the new Captain America on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but some of that backlash has been expressed through hilarious memes.
While Russell doesn’t have social media himself, in a recent interview, he revealed that friends had shown him enough of the memes that he does have a personal favorite of his own.
As soon as Russell made his debut at the end of the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, fans rushed to the internet to post their reactions and they were not kind (Russell has jokingly noted that “They just hate him!”). One meme compared John Walker as Captain America to the comedy troupe in Thor: Ragnarok who were doing their own ersatz versions of the plot of the Thor films up until that point…

However, by far, the most popular meme regarding the new Captain America was from people who noticed that there was a resemblance between the way Russell smiles as Walker in that first scene to the old man in the hit Pixar film, Up.

Finally, there were a lot of memes of your face after the first episode. How did you feel about that?
I don’t have social media, but I’ve gotten some of the stuff sent to me from friends that were just too good not to see. The best one is the “Up” guy with with the helmet on. It’s fucking unbelievable. I mean, whoever did that deserves an award of some kind. It’s flattering. They just hate the guy. They just hate him! It was fun to be the Marvel punching bag for a little while.
