The Irregulars: What’s the Linen Man’s TWISTED Endgame? | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of The Irregulars, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s The Irregulars holds a few key twists and turns as the first season progresses with Bea (Thaddea Graham) quickly discovering that Dr. Watson (Royce Pierreson) hired them due to Jessie’s (Darci Shaw) psychic powers. He’s hoping she can locate and close the supernatural “Rip” that’s allowing the spirit realm to seep over into the real world.

Luckily, on the astral plane, Jess finds help via the mysterious Linen Man (Clarke Peters), who reveals that like him, she’s a special psychic called an Ipsissimus. However, as the eight episodes unravel, we discover he’s more foe than friend with a very sinister endgame.

Jess is plagued by nightmares of dark beings, passed down to her by her mom, Alice, who got swallowed up by the Rip years ago. But as Jess’ mind is transported to these macabre places and interacting with the ghouls, the Linen Man keeps pulling her to Louisiana. He educates her on their powers, helping her to solve cases with Bea, and also showing her tricks of the trade on how to escape the horrors of her mind’s wandering.

He admits he needs her help, because like Watson, he wants to locate the Rip and close it. It gets a bit suspicious, though, when one astral session finds him on a boat to Victorian London, indicating he wants to oversee things himself and complete Jess’ training regarding her supernatural terrors.

But when she heads to the docks to meet him, it’s a massacre. Many people are dead and when she asks him what’s happening, the white-suited man is only interested in the Rip. In fact, he’s obsessed, so much so that he scolds Jess for being weak and afraid to probe people’s minds to find it.

At this point, it’s clear he’s an enemy with ulterior motives as he places a hex on her, transporting her mind into a prison where she’s haunted by all her fears. He reveals that he doesn’t want her dead, though, as he wants his mysterious son back home to mate with Jess and start a family of elite psychics.

As for the Rip, the Linen Man goes to find the imprisoned Bird Master Jess stopped in the first episode as he’s got the strongest link to it. Once he can find the Rip and absorb this power, he’ll become the ultimate Ipsissimus and oversee his grandkids as they follow in his footsteps, hoping this army can take over the world.

It’s an unfortunate experience for Jess as her mentor shatters her trust. He leaves her literally losing her mind as he wreaks havoc at the jail, using mind control to make the guards kill themselves as he finally extracts the location of the Rip.

Created by Tom Bidwell, The Irregulars stars Thaddea Graham as Bea, Darci Shaw as Jessie, Jojo Macari as Billy, McKell David as Spike, Harrison Osterfield as Leopold, Royce Pierreson as Dr. Watson and Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Sherlock Holmes. The Irregulars is available now on Netflix.
