The MCU’s Eternals Can FINALLY Reveal Thanos’ Family | CBR

The ultimate villain for the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos proved more than a match for the Avengers both times he went up against him. However, thanks to some help from the Infinity Stones, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes prevailed against the Mad Titan in Avengers: Endgame. For now, at least, Thanos seems unlikely to return in the present timeline. That doesn’t mean he can’t play a role in the MCU’s future, though, as the upcoming Eternals film may just make his return possible.

Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, Thanos first appeared in 1973’s Iron Man #55. Part of Thanos’ backstory involves him being a Deviant, which is an offshoot of the Eternals. This means that, in many ways, Thanos is essentially related to the Eternals, which is just why his role in the MCU might not be done yet.

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, it’s not totally clear just what shape the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take. While there’s a good indication the characters that Disney acquired from 21st Century Fox will soon arrive, there’s not much solid information on just when or how that might happen. Right now, there are a lot of potential directions the MCU could go in the future, though exactly which one it will take remains to be seen.
