WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of The Irregulars, now streaming on Netflix.
The first season of Netflix’s The Irregulars comes to a heartbreaking close as Bea’s (Thaddea Graham) gang of Victorian London misfits finally locate the second rift to what they discover is Purgatory. It’s up to her psychic sister, Jessie (Darci Shaw), to seal “the Rip,” but unfortunately, they learn it’s their mom, Alice (Eileen O’Higgins), who opened it up after getting trapped on the other side. This leads to the sisters making a tough choice, and it’s one that involves sacrifice as Jessie makes it clear she doesn’t want the spirit realm to take over the only world she’s ever known.

THE PURPOSE OF THE RIFT
Initially, the Linen Man found the location of the rift because he wanted to harness the power for himself, but Jessie’s able to kill him. She’s unprepared for Alice’s appearance, however, especially because her mom has no problem with the breach powering up the rest of the world and unleashing monsters on humanity. According to Alice, it’s the only way towards order and once both dimensions merge, she and her girls can live together for eternity.
Jessie doesn’t buy into this, however, and while she and Watson want to close the portal, Bea and Sherlock are hesitant. Sherlock and Watson used her in the past on the case of the first rift, and seeing as he’s actually Jessie’s dad, Sherlock doesn’t want to let go of this second chance at a family.
THE ECSTASY OF LIFE
The title of The Irregulars’ finale, “The Ecstacy of Life,” is about what Jessie does to convince Bea to seal the rift. She grabs her hand, uses her own psychic powers to invade Bea’s memories and show her the loving moments their teenage crew shared. Sure, they were poor and abused, but their bonds were built on a love for each other that remains pure and real.
Jessie also shows Bea how much Leo is in love with her, reminding her they will be at risk if they don’t shut down Alice’s plan. As a result, Bea switches sides because she knows she has to accept her grief and move on. Sherlock does as well, but as they seal it and Alice disappears, Sherlock jumps in with her. Watson tries to save him, but he makes amends by letting him go, opting to help Bea pull Jess back, which results in London getting saved.
A NEW BEGINNING
With Leo, Billy and Spike saved from demons, Jess and Bea embark on a new chapter. They hope Alice and Sherlock find peace on the other side, but it’s clear turmoil still looms on the horizon. Spike and Jess bond after he admits his biggest fear is losing her, while Billy’s still distraught he hasn’t told Bea how much he’s in love with her. Fortunately, an opportunity for Billy is open after Leopold leaves Bea because he’s the prince of England and has to go visit his cousin, Helena, as an arranged marriage looms.
Leopold agreed to the deal to keep Billy out of prison for assault, so Bea lets him go in a tear-filled parting. She then ends up at Watson’s home, who’s suffering after having to let go of Sherlock. They share their pain together and the season ends with Watson vowing not to leave Bea like everyone else does, hinting they’ll continue working on cases as a family.
Created by Tom Bidwell, The Irregulars stars Thaddea Graham as Bea, Darci Shaw as Jessie, Jojo Macari as Billy, McKell David as Spike, Harrison Osterfield as Leopold, Royce Pierreson as Dr. Watson and Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Sherlock Holmes. The Irregulars is available now on Netflix.
