Invincible: Why Allen the Alien Didn’t Kill Mark Grayson | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first three episodes of Invincible, available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.

In Invincible, Mark Grayson has it tough trying to live up to his father, Omni-Man, who’s considered the world’s finest superhero. Mark hopes his half-Viltrumite heritage will someday allow him to be just as good. And in the second episode, “Here Goes Nothing,” he gets another stern test in the form of the more experienced Allen the Alien. Surprisingly, however, the invader doesn’t kill Mark — for a very comedic reason.

Mark’s training with his dad to hit harder and absorb stronger blows when Cecil, chief of the Global Defense Agency, lets them know Allen’s in their orbit. Earth’s satellites picked him up outside of Mars, which means he’s returned for one of his periodic fights with Omni-Man.

However, Deb, Nolan’s wife and Mark’s mom, doesn’t want Nolan going after being injured in the assault that killed the Guardians of the Globe. She doesn’t know Omni-Man is actually responsible for the attack and that’s why he’s hurt. Nonetheless, it provides a great opportunity for Mark to test himself. Nolan tells his son the alien doesn’t hit that hard so Mark suits up, learning how to breathe — or not breathe — in space, and engages in a fist fight.

Mark’s thrown off by Allen’s use of psychic powers to get inside his head while the alien’s shocked Mark isn’t Omni-Man. Still, Allen tosses a satellite at him before holding him in a bear hug. As he squeezes Mark, Invincible is able to headbutt him and bring him down to the moon’s surface. However, Allen recovers and starts bashing Mark’s face in, while making condescending remarks about Invincible’s strength. He jokes that if Mark’s the planet’s defender, he feels sad for his people, but their fight comes to a halt when Mark inadvertently calls a time-out by expressing his confusion about why the brawl’s happening in the first place.

Allen’s shocked and pulls up a large stone to enlighten him. He explains he’s an evaluation officer for the Coalition of Planets, which assesses the champions protecting various worlds. He got a request from Urath to return after three years. Mark corrects him, explaining he’s returned to Earth, not Urath, leaving Allen with egg on his face.

The alien’s embarrassed at the error and apologizes but still jokes about Mark not being that invincible. That said, as he leaves knowing he’s in trouble at work, it seems like he could be a potential ally if he and Mark ever meet again. This leaves an open question, though: what will the relationship between Earth and the Coalition be when the planet eventually does fall on the organization’s radar?

Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Mae Whitman, Chris Diamantopoulos, Melise, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey Griffin and Max Burkholder.
