In a game filled to the brim with violence and guns galore, Red Dead Redemption 2 has more than its fair share of hunting experiences for players. However, one player, even with their guns holstered, had a tragic encounter with the Legendary Moose.
In a post submitted to Reddit, the user detailed the strange yet sad moment they caught up to the animal in the hopes of capturing a photo. They included a photo of the Legendary White Moose lying dead at the player character’s feet, with the explanation above that states, “So apparently if you chase the legendary moose around for too long trying to get the perfect picture he just kinda gives up and drops dead. Kinda feel bad now.”

The post caused players to speculate whether it was a bug or a feature. While random glitches like this are not uncommon in games, notable comparisons with other occurrences in the game have been observed. Gamers previously noticed that snakes in the game sometimes die when fleeing the player, especially if shepherded uphill. The reason is not entirely clear, but the game possesses many traversal hazards due to the engine in use. Small obstacles in the environment can sometimes trip up the player or cause them a small amount of damage.
Another aspect of the post that stood out was how long the player spent chasing the animal. The game includes a stamina core system for the player and their horse. If players continue to sprint for too long, it eventually results in damage due to depleting too much stamina. While it is unclear whether similar restrictions were implemented into the designs of wild animals, another recent clip surfaced of a player being chased by the Legendary Alligator. Much like with the moose, the alligator dropped dead after a long chase.
Based on the contextual clues in the photo, the animal collapsed not far from the area in which it spawns. In order to encounter the legendary animals, players need to first find their general locations on the map. Once they appear, it’s simply a matter of hunting the beast before leaving the area, otherwise, it will not spawn again for a while. Similarly, legendary animals were added to Red Dead Online in “The Naturalist” update, allowing players to hunt them for unique rewards.
Developed and published by Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption II is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PC.
