The reboot of ABC’s hit show The Wonder Years has added Avengers alum Don Cheadle to its cast, as the War Machine actor will be taking on the narrator role that was previously held by Daniel Stern in the original run.
Teenager Dean Williams, played by Elisha Williams, will be the central focus for the pilot, just as Kevin Arnold was in the original series that ran from 1988 to 1993. The script places the Williams family in Montgomery, AL during the same late 1960s period as the first series. Written and produced by Saladin Patterson (Psych, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory) and directed by Kevin actor Fred Savage, The Wonder Years will examine the lives of a Black family living during a time of much upheaval and change for the United States.

Cheadle joins an already impressive cast. Dulé Hill will play Dean’s father, Saycon Sengbloh is his mother and Laura Kariuki plays the older sister Kim. Behind the camera, Lee Daniels is executive producing along with his entertainment group partner Marc Velez, Patterson and Savage. Original series co-creator Neal Marlens has been brought on to consult for the single-camera project as well. Currently, only the pilot has been ordered to start filming this spring.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe alum has multiple upcoming projects this year. Cheadle appears in Stephen Soderberg’s new crime thriller film for HBO Max, titled No Sudden Move. Another reboot, this one of the hit film Space Jam and starring LeBron James, comes out this summer. And Disney+’s Armor Wars, based on the comic run of the same name, will see Cheadle return as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine, on the streaming service.
Produced by Lee Daniels, Saladin Patterson and Fred Savage, The Wonder Years stars Elisha “EJ” Williams, Saycon Sengbloh, Dulé Hill and Laura Kariuki. The series will air on ABC.
