What We Do in the Shadows spinoff series Wellington Paranormal is headed to the U.S. thanks to The CW and HBO Max’s first joint acquisition.
In an official press announcement, The CW Network and HBO Max revealed Wellington Paranormal will make its U.S. broadcast debut on The CW this summer, with each episode becoming available to stream on The CW’s ad-supported digital platforms (The CW app and CWTV.com) and HBO Max a day later. This is the first acquisition of this kind since last month, when The CW and HBO Max revealed their plans to “co-finance” original CW summer shows that will premiere on HBO Max before airing the next day on The CW.

Co-written/directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the 2014 horror/comedy mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows revolves around a group of vampires who live together as roommates in Wellington, New Zealand. Following the film’s critical and commercial success, Clement and Waititi developed Wellington Paranormal, a parody of police reality TV shows that follows Wellington police officers Minogue (Mike Minogue) and O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) from the movie as they investigate local paranormal incidents. The series premiered in New Zealand in July 2018 and only just returned for its third season last month.
Less than a year after Wellington Paranormal debuted on TVNZ 2, FX premiered What We Do in the Shadows, a spinoff show that revolves around three typical vampires — Laszlo, Nadja and Nandor — who live with an energy vampire named Colin Robinson and Nandor’s familiar, Guillermo De la Cruz, in Staten Island. The series was created by Clement and uses the same mockumentary format as the original film, with Waititi serving as an executive producer and occasional director. The FX show has received a good deal of critical acclaim for its blend of idiosyncratic humor, character development and queer-friendly subject matter, with Season 3 expected to premiere this year.
The full synopsis for Wellington Paranormal reads,
WELLINGTON PARANORMAL follows the adventures of Officers O’Leary (Karen O’Leary, “What We Do In The Shadows”) and Minogue (Mike Minogue, “What We Do In The Shadows”), hard-working members of the Wellington constabulary’s paranormal unit who, under the supervision of Sergeant Maaka (Maaka Pohatu, “Savage”), investigate supernatural occurrences that arise in the capital of New Zealand on a surprisingly regular basis.
Wellington Paranormal‘s U.S. premiere date and time will be announced later.
