Snowpiercer: Wilford Just Gained His Biggest Victory Yet | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 2, Episode 8, “The Eternal Engineer.”

Season 2 of Snowpiercer has been positioning Sean Bean’s Mr. Wilford to take back the Eternal Engine from Layton (Daveed Diggs), not just through sheer force but via politics. He’s been plotting cerebrally from Big Alice to let the 1,034 cars up front know no matter what, they need him to survive. And, in the latest episode, Wilford shows them why he wants to be called god when he achieves his ultimate victory by taking the train back.

Wilford’s been coy about plans, letting only Audrey in since they’ve rekindled their sadistic romance. Even Alexandra, Melanie’s daughter, has been shut out as he uses Icy Bob to brave the frigid weather, climb the cars and sabotage Snowpiercer’s engine. With no choice, Layton invites Wilford over as he alone has the God Module and the expertise to fix the engine.

However, things go bad when they have to shut the train down due to a hack Mel performed, causing Wilford and everyone else to panic. Layton’s scared because he’s out of his depth, but eventually, the boss adapts and gets everything on track. Unfortunately, during the commotion, Wilford got on the P.A. system to alert everyone what they needed to do to chip in, letting the cat out of the bag. Layton realizes this was the opening he was always angling for in the chess game and gives the train up.

Knowing a riot will ensue if he resists as everyone, even doubters, are chanting for Wilford, Layton’s head of the Brakemen, Roche, has him arrested and deported to Big Alice. Roche, Ruth and head of the Breachmen, Boki, all know Layton’s the better leader, but they have to play the game, which at this point, is all about optics.

It won’t be easy, though, because Wilford will be taking out traitors one by one. Layton goes to Big Alice to be debriefed, only to find his family sedated and placed in the Drawers. He doesn’t go in, but it’s clear this is his punishment, and it will be the same for whoever else refuses to fall in line.

Alex could be next because Wilford already has Mel’s drivers, Ben and Javi, fearful and under this thumb again, and if she keeps missing her mom, he’ll aim to teach her a harsh lesson. As for Mel, if she comes back on board, she will be returning to her worst nightmare, though she shouldn’t be surprised because Wilford already let her know he had contingency measures.

Snowpiercer stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Jaylin Fletcher. The two-part Season 2 finale will air on March 29 at 9pm ET/PT on TNT.
