Star Wars: The Black Series Embraces the Comics – Even Jaxxon

Star Wars‘ latest 6-inch Black Series action figures take inspiration from classic Star Wars books and comics. These new toys come as part of Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary celebration.

First and foremost, The Black Series welcomes a new Luke Skywalker figure, which is based on the 1991 novel Star Wars: Heir to the Empire. Luke is joined by Ysalamiri, the Force-blocking pet of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Next up is the rabbit-like smuggler Jaxxon, who was first introduced in Marvel’s original Star Wars comics back in the 1970s before later making a comeback in IDW Publishing’s Star Wars Adventures. Then, there’s Sith Apprentice Darth Maul, who appears as he did in the 2000 Dark Horse comic book series Star Wars: Darth Maul. And lastly, speaking of Dark Horse comics, we have Kir Kanos from the 1997-1998 series Star Wars: Crimson Empire. “I’ve been a fan of Star Wars comic books since the 1980s, so the very idea of having action figures based on Star Wars comics publishing is mind-blowing in the very best way,” said Lucasfilm Publishing Executive Editor Jennifer Heddle. “Seeing these figures takes me right back to memories of sitting on my bedroom floor… to have Lucasfilm acknowledge that legacy in this way is absolutely thrilling. Fans are going to be so excited to see these comic book characters in a new way, especially when done with the incredible skill and detail the Black Series is famous for.”

“With so many stories and fan-favorite characters to choose from, it’s a challenge to narrow down to just a few,” added Lucasfilm Director of Product Design Chris Gollaher. “We selected these four based on fan appeal, and because they show the tremendous range and potential of our publishing program by representing comics and novels alike.”

While discussing Star Wars comics and books as a whole, Gollaher added, “At its core, Star Wars is all about amazing storytelling, and throughout the history of the company, some of the most imaginative and exciting stories have come from our publishing program. We couldn’t celebrate the first 50 years of the company without acknowledging some of the great characters and stories that have come from our novels and comic series throughout the years.”
