In the world of anime, a hero’s kindness is generally seen as a positive quality. It helps to engender the trust of their allies and win the hearts of their audiences, especially when they cite a specific value they intend to champion.
However, their generosity has often come with significant and debilitating drawbacks, ones that jeopardized (if not entirely ruined) their initial mission. Such instances where a hero’s kindness held them back go to show that benevolence must be kept in moderation in order for anime heroes to find success in their quests.
10 Yami’s Chivalry Got Yugi’s Grandfather Kidnapped (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Pegasus sought to attract Yugi to Duelist Island for the Millennium Puzzle on his neck. In order to properly incentivize him, he challenged him on a videotaped duel, one that would stake his grandfather’s soul.
Though Yami understood that he could run out the clock since the battle was timed (as it was pre-recorded), he decided that doing so would be dishonorable and cowardly. As a consequence, Pegasus was able to defeat him with his Millennium Eye and force him to attend his island for any hope of seeing the elder Muto again.
9 Eren Refused To Believe That Reiner Was The Traitor, After He Told Him (Attack On Titan)
After the dust had settled in, in the battle for Utgard Castle, Reiner understood that he could not continue to frivolously endanger his life. He explicitly told Eren that he and Bertholdt were the Titan spies, though ironically, Yeager refused to believe him.
His hesitation was so profound that he did not even properly process what had happened until he was already in the Armored Titan’s retreating clutches. By then, it was too late for him to mount a proper defense or be rescued by the other Scouts.
8 Gon Gave Genthru The Benefit Of The Doubt & Got His Throat Crushed (Hunter X Hunter)
During the final confrontation of the Greed Island arc, Gon wanted to stake his cards against the Bomber’s own. Genthru moved to demonstrate that he had what he claimed he did, only to punch his gullible adversary in the throat.
This made it difficult for Freecss to access his favored “Rock, Paper, Scissors” Nen technique, significantly debilitating him for the coming battle. Even after he managed to defeat the Bomber, he bizarrely insisted that the villain’s wounds were tended to before his own.
7 Naruto’s Refusal To Use Lethal Force Against Sasuke Cost Him His Arm (Naruto)
During the final major battle of Shippuden, Naruto and Sasuke came to blows. In spite of the fact that the rogue Uchiha now commanded a rinnegan and enslaved the power of the other eight Tailed-Beasts, his friend refused to kill him.
Though he would eventually find success in subduing his former ally, it did not come without cost. Both Shinobi lost their arms for the destructiveness of the duel. While Naruto’s would be replaced with Hashirama cells, it left an unmistakable scar on his body.
6 L’s Reluctance To Condemn Light Got Him Killed (Death Note)
Since they were introduced, L had a strong (and correct) premonition that Light was the Kira killer. Though he could have exposed him after collecting a sufficient amount of data (one supported through his flawless reputation), he justified that he couldn’t take Yagami down until his evidence was irrefutable.
The personal friendship he fostered with his suspect was a significant obstacle in his ability to condemn him. Because of his leniency and hesitation, Light managed to slay him by forcing Rem to write his name in her notebook.
5 The Phantom Troupe Sought A Way To Restore Chrollo After Kurapika Showed Mercy (Hunter X Hunter)
After Kurapika outsmarted Chrollo, he entertained the idea of killing him. However, at the behest of Gon and Killua, he put a Nen condition on the man instead that prevented him from using his power or coming into contact with the other members of Phantom Troupe.
This was intended to make him honor their deal to dissolve the organization. However, the other limbs of the spider actively clamored to restore their leader, as demonstrated through their foray into Greed Island.
4 All Might Was Significantly Wounded After Protecting A Bystander (My Hero Academia)
During the battle at Kamino, what destruction ensued put many innocent lives at risk. Though the other professional heroes were able to escort most to safety, one of them was pinned beneath the detritus of a fallen building and desperately cried for help.
Struggling to defeat Toshinori, All For One noticed them and identified his opportunity. He used his quirk to cause a devastating ranged attack in their direction, one that All Might was obliged to intercept. Doing so exacerbated the deterioration of his muscle state and exposed him as a withered husk for the world to know.
3 Guila & Jericho Both Continued To Attack The Sins After Being Spared (Seven Deadly Sins)
Guila and Jericho were both Holy Knights that had been defeated and shown mercy by the Sins. In spite of Ban’s protests, Meliodas spared them both out of the kindness of his heart and for the fact that he knew they were being manipulated by Fraudrin.
Instead of learning from their generosity or critically examining it, they turned to demon blood in order to increase their power. This made their second confrontation with the heroes more precarious for all parties involved.
2 George Joestar’s Generosity Destroyed His Family (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
After being “saved” by Dario Brando, George Joestar volunteered to let Dio live as his adoptive son following his rescuer’s passing. This was a massive mistake that would claim his life, destroy his family, and nearly have widespread ramifications for the entire planet.
In addition to gradually poisoning George to death, Dio tormented Jonathan out of malice and defiled Erina in hopes of breaking his spirit. The patriarch would only realize Brando’s duplicity after it was too late.
1 Edward’s Attempt To Revive His Mother Was A Disaster (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Trisha was the mother of Edward and Alphonse Elric. After her unfortunate passing, both boys sought to restore her out of love. They would intend to accomplish this through their limited understanding of alchemy.
However, what followed was nothing short of a disaster. Not only was Alphonse’s body entirely destroyed, but Edward also lost an arm. Worse yet, their mother became a homunculus under the sway of malevolent forces in the 2003 iteration of the anime.
