The Star Wars universe contains a vast galaxy, spanning multiple worlds, systems and planets. Some of these planets are more recognized than others due to the characters that originated there. Tatooine, for example, is a popular planet because it is where both Anakin and Luke Skywalker are from. Likewise, Alderaan is the home of Princess Leia, Ahsoka is from the planet Shili, Ezra Bridger is from Lothal, Qui-Gon Jinn is from Coruscant, Darth Maul is from Dathomir, Palpatine is from Naboo, Rey is from Jakku, Poe is from Yavin 4 and so on.
However, one very critical character’s home planet remained largely unknown until recently. This character is none other than Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, whose planet was never explicitly stated in the film series. But at the Star Wars Celebration V of 2010, George Lucas revealed the name Kenobi’s homeworld: Stewjon.

In an interview at Star Wars Celebration V, comedian/TV host Jon Stewart asked what Obi-Wan’s homeworld was named. Lucas replied, “This is one of the first things I wrote in the very first script. He comes from the planet Stewjon.”
The director’s response was assumed to be a joke, made up on the spot, as Stewjon was clearly a combination of Jon Stewart’s last and first name. While it did get a laugh from the audience, it also got much more than that — an official spot in Star Wars canon. Multiple Star Wars resources list Stewjon as Obi-Wan’s home planet, such as the books The Star Wars Book and Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need To Know, as well as the character’s info page on Star Wars‘ official website.
George Lucas’ on-the-spot naming of Kenobi’s planet just goes to show that creative inspiration can come from anywhere. While oftentimes filmmakers thoroughly contrive meaningful names and places for their works, it doesn’t always need to be this way. Sometimes creators can just go with the first thing that comes to mind and it makes for a good backstory. This is certainly the case with Obi-Wan’s homeworld, Stewjon. Now that the planet is canon, the upcoming Disney+ show, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi, has the opportunity to show fans where the beloved Jedi Master is from.
