Walt Disney Pictures debuted a new look its upcoming film Cruella, which sees Emma Stone’s titular 101 Dalmatians villain embracing her “killer instinct.”
Released during the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on March 14, the minute-long clip shows Stone’s character — then known as an aspiring designer named Estella — working to become the next big thing in fashion. As one point, Estella is seen exchanging words with Baroness von Hellman, a fashion icon portrayed by Emma Thompson, who tells the young designer, “Whether you have the killer instinct is the big question.”
The remainder of the clip shows Estella evolving into the “Queen of Mean” — Cruella de Vil. The tension between the Baroness and Cruella appears to come to a head when the younger designer interrupts the Baroness big red carpet entrance by driving onto the carpet atop a motorcycle while wearing face makeup that reads, “The future.”
The footage also shows “Cruella” being projected in lights on a nearby building as a cover of “These Boots Are Made for Walking” plays in the background, and includes Stone saying in a voice over, “I am woman, hear me roar.” The teaser ends with the Cruella telling her lackeys to put on some music to “lighten the mood.”
The full official synopsis for Cruella reads as follows:
Academy Award winner Emma Stone stars in Disney’s Cruella, an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Cruella, which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, Cruella stars Emma Stone, Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, Joel Fry and Emily Beecham. The film arrives in theaters on May 28.
