Bleach: 10 Best Sword Duels in the Series, Ranked | CBR

The combat system of Bleach is largely centered around zanpakuto, or soul-cutting swords. All Soul Reapers use these weapons, and most Arrancars do too. Zanpakuto can be released to perform special techniques, such as creating ice or fire, but old-fashioned sword fighting never goes out of style.

Many characters in Bleach are expert duelists, and they are always ready to cross swords with their enemies in a high-stakes duel. Which sword dueling scenes in Bleach stand out the most, based on the strength of the combatants and the emotional stakes involved? To count, a fight should have at least a few blows exchanged where each party’s zanpakuto is sealed or still resembles a sword somehow.

10 Ichigo Kurosaki Vs Renji Abarai (Final Duel)

In the first season of Bleach, most Soul Reapers were hostile to Ichigo and Rukia, and that included Lieutenant Renji Abarai. They reached a stalemate in season 1, and once the Soul Society invasion arc began, the rematch took place.

Ichigo’s new shikai, Zangetsu, clashed mightily against Renji’s own shikai, Zabimaru. This duel would be eclipsed by later ones, but the emotional stakes were high, and this was a thrilling and bloody sword duel for its time. By the duel’s end, Renji agreed that Rukia must be rescued, no matter what.

9 Ikkaku Madarame Vs Edorad Leones

One night, Grimmjow Jeagerjaques and his minions invaded Karakura Town and ambushed Ichigo and all his friends. One of Grimmjow’s strongest followers was Edorad Leones, who engaged Ikkaku Madarame in a fierce duel. But Ikkaku was taking things lightly.

As a true Squad 11 warrior, Ikkaku drew out the fight to savor it, and Edorad was shocked and insulted that Ikkaku was acting like this. But Ikkaku backed it up with serious skill, and he cleverly dealt a nasty slash to Edorad’s face before the Arrancar finally used his released form. Ikkaku never fails to fight with a sharp attitude to match his blade.

8 Byakuya Kuchiki Vs Zommari Rureaux

Captain Byakuya Kuchiki’s duel with Ichigo was an exciting one, but Byakuya rarely used his bare blade in that fight. But he did use his sealed zanpakuto to have a proper sword duel with Zommari Rureaux, the 7th Espada. In that duel, speed counted for everything.

Byakuya was shocked to see Zommari duplicating himself with afterimages, the result of Zommari’s incredible speed. Byakuya gave it his all, but the wily Zommari actually outmaneuvered this famously fast Captain, and nearly dealt a fatal blow with his bare sword. Byakuya escaped at the last second by borrowing Yoruichi Shihoin’s patented escape technique.

7 Shuhei Hisagi Vs Findorr Calius

This duel was shorter in the original Bleach manga, but in the anime, Shuhei Hisagi‘s clash with Findorr Calius was much more fleshed out. Curiously, the Arrancar named Findorr could increase his sword fighting skills as he removed more and more pieces of his Hollow mask. This made him a real challenge.

Shuhei found himself on the defensive as Findorr kept ramping up his speed and technique, impressing and worrying Shuhei with his seemingly unlimited growth as a duelist. Shuhei finally turned the tables in this fierce exchange with his shikai, Kazeshini, and finished off his foe at last.

6 Toshiro Hitsugaya Vs Tier Halibel

Despite his youth, Captain Toshiro Hitsugaya was a prodigy with the sword, and some Soul Reapers estimated that he would become the Soul Society’s #1 duelist when he was older. But he met his match against Tier Halibel, the 3rd Espada. She was also an expert duelist, but not a boastful one.

Toshiro had never faced a foe like this before, and he had to use every ounce of his training to keep up with Halibel’s odd, hollowed-out zanpakuto. In fact, Halibel could charge up her cero blasts and integrate them into her sword, a truly innovative way to duel.

5 Ichigo Kurosaki Vs His Inner Hollow

Ichigo had to hurry and tame his inner Hollow before it consumed him, so he faced that inner demon within his personal world. But the Hollow version of Ichigo loved battle and had sharp instincts, meaning he was more likely to take command of Ichigo instead of the other way around. There’s only one way to settle this.

Ichigo and his terrifying Hollow self came to blows with their bare blades, and they struck even, as expected. Ichigo tried to get the edge with bankai, but his Hollow self mirrored him, then took the lead in the duel. It wasn’t until the last moment when Ichigo pierced his Hollow self with his bankai and won the duel for good. Now he’s the king, not the horse.

4 Rukia Kuchiki Vs Aaroniero Arurruerie

During the Hueco Mundo story arc, Rukia Kuchiki went up against the bizarre 9th Espada, Aaroniero Arurruerie. He had the face of Kaien Shiba, not to mention his shikai, and Rukia was in for the fight of her life. Could she defeat her old sword instructor in mortal combat?

Rukia gave it her best shot, despite being much better with kido spells than sword vs sword combat. Rukia narrowly escaped the wrath of Kaien’s trident-shaped shikai, then used kido to admit sunlight into the room and expose Aaroniero’s true nature. After that point, Aaroniero switched to his zanpakuto’s released form.

3 Ichigo Kurosaki Vs Kenpachi Zaraki

Partway through the Soul Society arc, Ichigo came face to face with his greatest foe yet: Captain Kenpachi Zaraki of Squad 11. Ichigo didn’t really want to fight, but Kenpachi absolutely did, and he even offered to let Ichigo strike the first blow unopposed.

Ichigo fell short both in terms of strength and willpower, and he fell behind as Kenpachi kept up the pressure. Ichigo started to catch up again, though, and forced Kenpachi to release his eyepatch and reveal his true strength. Finally, with Zangetsu as his trusted ally, Ichigo struck the final blow and miraculously defeated Kenpachi in this climactic sword fight.

2 Ichigo Kurosaki Vs Grimmjow Jeagerjaques (Final Fight)

Ichigo clashed with Grimmjow three times during the story of Bleach, with the final fight being the longest and by the far the most exciting. Ichigo and Grimmjow fought fair and square as bitter rivals inside Las Noches, and they both opened the fight with their sealed zanpakuto. Nothing like a good warmup.

Grimmjow, like Kenpachi, lived only to fight, and his willpower gave him the edge over Ichigo at first. Still, Ichigo fought back with all his strength in bankai mode, and the battle raged all over the desert, sword against sword. Eventually, Grimmjow would unveil his released form, Pantera, and move the duel to its final stage.

1 Kenpachi Zaraki Vs Nnoitora Gilga

Kenpachi was a hero by the time he arrived in Las Noches to back up Ichigo. The 5th Espada, Nnoitora Gilga, was too strong for Ichigo to handle, so Kenpachi took over and engaged his Espada counterpart in a bone-crushing duel to the death.

Both warriors savored every minute of the fight, and neither of them relied on tricky spells or abilities in their duel. Instead, they both fought blade to blade, even when Nnoitora released his zanpakuto, Santa Teresa. Kenpachi, who was on the verge of defeat, finally gave it his all and used the two-handed kendo style to take down Nnoitora for good.
