Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller has opened up about his plans to create a prequel for the 2015 film centering on the early life of protagonist Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road – saying he plans to recast the part due to the time difference in the stories.
“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet,” Miller told the New York Times. “Despite the valiant attempts on The Irishman, I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”
Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman used de-aging technology to present its leads, played by Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, across different eras and ages without changing actors.
It seems a frontrunner for the part has already emerged – Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer has been eyed for “months”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
No projected release date for the untitled Mad Max: Furiosa spin-off film has been announced.
