Hamilton just got a Disney+ release date that will have it out on July 3, a year earlier than previously announced, but there’s another Disney-owned property with a musical you can watch in full right now: Marvel’s Spider-Man.
No, we’re not talking about the ill-fated Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. We’re talking about Spider-Man Rocks!, a short-lived stage show that ran from 2002-2004 at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park.
The production – which features theater actors portraying Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Mary Jane Watson, Green Goblin and a variety of generic characters in choreographed action, singing songs ranging from “Holding Out For a Hero” to “She Bangs,” “There Goes My Hero”, and more predictably (and less predictably) themed popular songs – is captured in this 19-minute video from YouTube user Christopher Miller (no word on whether this is the same Christopher Miller who co-produced Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse):
The show was a product of Universal’s theme park license for Marvel Comics characters that led to the late 90s opening of the “Marvel Island” portion of Florida’s Universal’s Islands of Adventure, which is still in operation thanks to the ongoing contract, which predates Disney’s ownership of Marvel.
