Nightwing in Dark Nights: Metal #3

Scott Snyder has publicly declared he’s done writing Batman, at least in solo projects.
During a Monday webconference Q&A Snyder conducted with a small group of fans in benefit of the Hero Initiative, the writer of the upcoming Death Metal and former Batman writer revealed he’s probably going to get to author a special project involving Bruce’s first Robin, Dick Grayson.
Asked by a fan if we could do a ‘Year One’ story with any other member of the Bat-family besides Batman, who would he choose, Snyder responded, “Funny you should ask.”
He then talked in some details about something he’s publicly mentioned before – that he’s currently pitching a Nightwing story to DC that he called “a comprehensive view of Dick’s full career and what makes him a very different detective than Bruce.”

Snyder explained he loved writing for the character during his Detective Comics run and wanted to tell more stories with him while Dick was Batman, but explained DC brought Bruce back and did “Court of Owls” and he never got to go back to him despite wanting to for a long time.
“He’s the character that more than anyone else in the Bat-Family wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Snyder, explaining his admiration for the character. “He’s not the best detective from an empirical standpoint, but he’s the best emotional detective out of all the former Robins, in my opinion. He’s someone who understands human psychology; he understands empathy. There are mysteries Bruce wouldn’t do as well on as Dick and he [Dick] sometimes gets shortchanged in terms of people thinking of him as Batman-light.”
“But I don’t think of him that way,” he continued. “I think of him more as someone with a very different skill set as a detective and Gotham would look very different under his mantle.”
And that’s what the Nightwing story he’s pitching is about: Dick takes over the the mantle after Bruce and his story examines, “How he runs Gotham differently.”
“I’m excited to do it and it looks like I’ll get the chance,” he said.

Although not making it clear if it would be during this project or if he was just thinking out loud, Snyder also said he loved Chuck Dixon’s Robin: Year One and Grant Morrison’s beginnings of his stories of Dick as Batman, and he wants to do a ‘Year One’ story of Dick at each phase of his career and that he’d love to do something with him beginning as Nightwing.
Snyder is just one of dozen of creators taking part in Hero Initiative’s live Zoom pro-fan webconferences to raise money for comic book creators in medical or financial need.
