Enver Gjokaj will reprise his Agent Carter role as Daniel Souza for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7, reports Entertainment Weekly.
Agents season 7 flashes back to the 1930s, with the team – Coulson intact – traveling into the past for their final mission – thus enabling Gjokaj to appear as Souza, pre-Agent Carter‘s 1950s setting.
“It wasn’t anywhere near my brain,” Gjokaj, told EW of reprising Souza, whom he last played in 2016’s Agent Carter season 2 prior to the show’s cancellation. “I would’ve been thrilled at any moment for it to come back, but I think as an actor you don’t have time. You just have to move on to the next project.”
As one of the founding agents of the original S.H.I.E.L.D., Souza will have unique insight for the modern Agents – especially Coulson.
“One of the things we think is so fun — especially with Coulson, who’s just a fanboy for S.H.I.E.L.D. history — is them just getting to walk right into [that history],” co-showrunner Jed Whedon explained. “With Sousa, we had a good opportunity to hit that note with Agent Coulson.”
“What’s unexpectedly, for me, really fun is that we realized once we got Coulson and [Sousa] in the same scene that they’re very similar,” Gjokaj added.
“Since Jed and I worked with him on Dollhouse, we’re very aware of what Enver is capable of,” said co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen. “So we were just feeling like we could dive a little deeper with Sousa.”
Another Agent Carter character, James D’Arcy’s Edwin Jarvis, had a cameo in one of Avengers: Endgame‘s time travel scenes.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 7 is set to premiere on ABC on May 27.
