With new comics on hold both digitally and in the Direct Market, last week Todd McFarlane laid out a way for the comic industry to rally: a “unified front” for the major publishers, along with a bold proposal that those unified publishers offer 10 new, popular top titles with the most demand for free as digital downloads.
Newsarama reached out to several publishers about this proposal – and for a general message to readers in this time of uncertaintly, and now BOOM! Studios’ President of Publishing & Marketing Filip Sablik has responded.
“Todd McFarlane is a titan in the industry and an incredibly accomplished businessman in addition to his obvious contributions as a creator. The industry is better for having him contribute his ideas, knowledge, and solutions to the conversation,” Sablik told Newsarama. “BOOM! Studios has been supportive of a unified industry wide response since our Founder & CEO, Ross Richie, issued a letter to our retail partners on March 19th. We reiterated our commitment to and support of an industry wide, jointly coordinated response in our Retailer Support Services Program announcement on March 23rd.”
“We continue to explore numerous potential solutions to the problems facing our industry, both internally and externally with partners and peers, and we’ll announce any additional plans when they are finalized,” Sablik continued. “The most important point Todd made recently is that even as we work to take care of our teams, creators, and retail partners, we can’t forget to take care of our readers and fans. At BOOM!, our marketing team has been working overtime to share free digital reading material, engage with fans on social media, and continue to stoke the fans’ amazing passion as we reevaluate our publishing schedule.”
While the release of new comic books has been suspended, BOOM! Studios continues to release new OGNs and collections digitally and to its booktrade channels.
