Alex Raymond’s original Sunday comic strip artwork for the first Flash Gordon appearance has sold for a record-setting price of $480,000 according to the auctioneer Profiles in History. The piece was sold at an auction held on Tuesday.

This Flash Gordon strip is the first appearance of the character, and also began his origin story. It was published January 7, 1934 in newspapers nationwide through King Features Syndicate. Raymond’s original art is pencil and ink on a 28.25″ x 23″ illustration board.
Raymond’s original art for the first Jungle Jim comic strip also sold at the auction today, for $90,000.
