Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza is branching out to prose novels, as he’s sold a series called Suburban Dicks to Putnam/Berkley.

“I’ve always described Suburban Dicks as a sarcastic suburban mystery,” Nicieza told Newsarama. “It’s about Andrea Stern and Kenny Lee hovering in front of and behind age 30 who are seeking to reclaim lives that had shown tremendous promise but got derailed along the way.

“She should have been an FBI profiler but is now pregnant with her fifth child and he won a Pulitzer for journalism while in college but now works for a weekly paper,” the writer continued. “The death of a gas station attendant brings them together to solve the crime and they realize the recent murder might have its roots in a 50-year-old disappearance.”

The longtime comics writer/editor has been branching out the past few years, working in television, movies, and games – but this prose novel story is one that’s been on his mind since his years writing Deadpool and Cable.

“It’s a story I’ve wanted to write since 1993! I tried a couple times over the years and was never happy with it, but in late 2017, I decided to give it another shot,” he explained. “I got a lot of encouragement and advice, including from Alex Segura who knows full well how to transition between Archie Comics and book publishing with his great Pete Fernandez series.”

“I finished a first draft in early 2019 and then, on the advice of several readers and a professional editor I hired for feedback, I started cutting, cutting, cutting. I secured an agent, Albert Lee at UTA in the summer of 2019,” Nicieza continued. “Off of UTA’s notes, I cut and cut and cut some more. We took the book out in November and got great response from several publishers. It was incredibly surprising and very rewarding. They reacted very positively to the main characters, the mystery, but most of all, the things the book has to say about suburbia, immigration, and opportunity. Going with Putnam was also a homecoming of sorts, since my first job out of college was working at Putnam/Berkley!”

Niceiza worked there from 1983 to 1985, moving up the ranks from a worker in their production department to becoming Managing Editor before exiting in 1985 for a position at Marvel.

Suburban Dicks is slated for publication in 2021.
