Robert Pattinson is gearing up to play a “complicated” version of Bruce Wayne in director Matt Reeves’ The Batman – and according to the actor, this version of the caped crusader won’t be as cut-and-dried a hero as some of his DC contemporaries.

“Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character,” Pattinson told the New York Times when asked about his previous assertion he wouldn’t play heroic characters. “I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”

“I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character,” Pattinson continued, elaborating that his Batman will be somewhat morally flawed. “His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character. There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.”

Pattinson is ready to take on the role, though – he’s even steeled himself against negative backlash at his casting, something he anticipated as soon as he got the part.

“Maybe I’m just used to abuse by now,” Pattinson joked. “At least I didn’t get death threats this time — that’s a plus! It’s funny that people are so very angry about Twilight. I never particularly understood it.”

“With Batman, if I’d done it a few years ago, I would have been incredibly nervous, but I’ve still got a few months before we start shooting. Plenty of time to have a panic attack!”

The Batman is due out in theaters June 25, 2021.
