Updated October 6, 2019: Joker‘s opening weekend domestic receipts are now an estimated $93.5 million (‘actuals’ are released Monday afternoon), which is the October record, besting last year’s Venom ($80.3m).
The film also dominated the overseas market, with an estimated $140.5 million from 73 markets, and Warner Bros.’ biggest opening weekend this year in 39 of them.
The makes an estimated worldwide total of $234m, demonstrating once again the worldwide appetite for comic book-based film is strong.
Original story from October 5, 2019: Director Todd Phillips’ Joker earned $39.9m at the domestic box office on October 4, according to Variety – breaking the opening day box office record for films released in October which was previously held by 2018’s Venom with $32.5m.
Variety estimates the controversial film will take in up to $92m in its opening weekend, which would once again beat out Venom, which grossed $80.3m in its domestic opening weekend, to be the biggest October domestic opening weekend ever.
Joker is now in theaters.
