The long-gestating Harbinger film has been moved from Sony Pictures back to Paramount Pictures after four years in development, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Paramount first licensed Harbinger back in 2008 as a feature film, but the rights lapsed and Sony picked it up in 2015.

Valiant is reportedly taking their script, screenwriter, director, and producer with them to Paramount.

Sony reportedly had plans to begin filming Harbinger later this year with talks underway with Dylan O’Brien and Noah Centineo for starring roles, but the film was taken off the studio’s fast track for development. According to THR, Harbinger‘s producers hope the film will have “short development process” before going into production.

The 2015 Sony/Valiant deal was a five-picture deal to include Bloodshot, Harbinger, two sequels, and a crossover Harbinger Wars film. Bloodshot is scheduled to hit theaters February 21, 2020, but this reported studio move for Harbinger would seemingly make plans for crossovers – and a larger, cohesive cinematic universe – more complicated.

In an interesting note, THR reports that “project insiders” downplay Bloodshot’s part in a shared universe, and that Valiant is “focused on keeping together its core characters such as X-O Manowar, Eternal Warrior and Archer & Armstrong, whose rights it retains.”

Back in August 2017, Dave Bautista said he was in talks to star in an Eternal Warrior film. Earlier that year, Venom director Ruben Fleischer reportedly signed on to direct a Archer & Armstrong movie.
