Warner Bros.’s Joker has won the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion jury award, reports Deadline. The Joaquin Phoenix-led film premiered at the festival on August 31.
“They took a comic book mythology that has been done in so many ways and overturned it and revitalized it for now [with compassion],” said jury member Marry Harron.
DC Chief Creative Officer/co-Publisher Jim Lee echoed the acclaim on Instagram, saying “Simply amazing. Congratulations to writer/director Todd Phillips on winning the prestigious Golden Lion – the top award at the Venice Film Festival!”
Joker opens in North American theaters October 4.
