New Mutants, the final 20th Century Fox-produced X-Men franchise film, may be facing an uncertain future with its new owners at Disney.

According to Variety, Disney is unhappy with the overall box office performance of Fox-produced films this year, including Dark Phoenix, the final film of Fox’s core X-Men story – and that may spell trouble for its successor, New Mutants.

Citing a “knowledgable insider,” the Hollywood trade reports Disney is “unimpressed” with New Mutants, believing it has “limited box office potential.” During Disney’s purchase of Fox, rumors swirled that New Mutants would be relegated to a streaming service rather than receiving a theatrical release – however at last update it had been greenlit for reshoots with a new 2020 release date scheduled.

Now scheduled for release on April 3, 2020, New Mutants previously suffered several delays pushing it back almost two years from its original planned April, 2018 release date.
