The cinematographer of Ben Affleck’s now-canceled The Batman has come out with details about the actor/director/co-writer’s plans for the film – and a bit on why it never got made. In an interview with the HappySadConfused podcast, Robert Richardson – who worked for Affleck on 2016’s Live by Night, said that the script was the main impedient with the film getting made.

“I wanted to shoot Batman with [Ben Affleck] cause that was the next film we had,” Richardson said. “There was a script, but not a loved script. There was a lot of work he was doing to it to change it. He was going into the more insanity aspects. He was entering more into the Arkham, he’s going into where everyone was bad.”

When the podcast’s hosts mentioned that Arkham Asylum had largely not been portrayed in live-action films previously, Richardson said that was part of the reason they wanted to.

“No, and that’s where we were going,” Richardson answered. “I was very interested in that one.”

Richardson since was director of photography for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
