As expected, Marvel Studios’ presentation in Comic Con International’s vaunted Hall H revealed a slate of films and TV shows for Marvel’s ‘Phase 4’ – including some surprising announcements.
Here’s a rundown of what was announced:
THE ETERNALS
First up, Feige and director Chloe Zhao introduced the cast of Eternals – which Feige said would go directly to its Jack Kirby comic book roots with the Celestials pitting the Eternals against their ancient enemies the Deviants. The cast includes Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Curiously, no Sersi was announced, despite her being the center of press chatter about the film for months.
Eternals is due out November 6, 2020.
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER
Next up, Disney+’s TV show The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The show follows the events of Avengers: Endgame in which Sam Wilson was given the mantle of Captain America. Daniel Bruhl will reprise his role as Zemo – including donning a version of his comic book costume. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie also reprise their roles.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier debuts on Disney+ in the fall of 2020.
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS
Next up, Feige and director Destin Daniel Cretton discussed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – starring Simu Liu in the title role, and Tony Leung as the ‘real’ Mandarin. Awkwafina will also appear in the film, slated for a February 12, 2021 theatrical release.
WANDAVISION
Feige then presented Disney+’s WandaVision, which reunites Wanda Maximoff as Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany as Vision, alongside Teyonah Parris, who will portray the adult Monica Rambeau in the post-Avengers: Endgame show.
WandaVision will premiere on Disney+ in spring 2021.
LOKI
Tom Hiddleston appeared to discuss his Loki TV show, in which he’ll show what happened to Loki following Avengers: Endgame.
“Where did Loki go when he took the Space Stone?” Hiddleston asked? No release date was announced.
DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS
Feige brought out director Scott Derrickson to discuss Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – a sequel to the 2017 film, which Derrickson said would be the first “scary movie” in the MCU.
Elizabeth Olsen will also appear as Wanda Maximoff in The Multiverse of Madness – with WandaVision said to lead directly to the film’s storyline.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premieres May 7, 2021.
WHAT IF…?
The previously announced animated show What If…? will feature Geoffrey Wright as the Watcher, with various MCU actors reprising their roles. It’ll premiere on Disney+ in summer 2021.
HAWKEYE
Feige was then joined by Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner onstage to announce an eponymous show which will also feature Kate Bishop.
Hawkeye premieres on Disney+ in the fall of 2021.
THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Thor 4 has been confirmed with the title Thor: Love and Thunder from director Taika Waititi. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will reprise their roles as Thor and Valkyrie – with Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster to become Thor, as in comic books.
Thor: Love and Thunder is due out November 5, 2021.
BLACK WIDOW
The cast of the now in production Black Widow joined Feige onstage to show off early footage from the film, including a look at a skull-faced Taskmaster. The cast includes Scarlett Johansson reprising her role of Natasha Romanoff, as well as newcomers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian, Florence Pugh as Yelena, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina.
Black Widow is slated for a May 1, 2020 release in U.S. theaters.
Finally, in a surprise announcement, Feige brought out actor Mahershala Ali, who will portray Blade in a reboot film.
Feige also namedropped several other upcoming films and sequels including Captain Marvel 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Panther 2, Fantastic Four, and “mutants”. Conspicuously absent from announcement or mention were any form of Ant-Man 3 or third Spider-Man movie.
