In celebration California College of the Arts’ MFA in Comics graduate students making their return to San Francisco, California College of the Arts will host its seventh annual guest speaker series featuring three of comics’ most vibrant creators and a special reading by our graduating cartoonists.

Each Friday in July, the Comics in the City speaker series will highlight various aspects of the comics medium from independent publishing to the craft of writing and the future of digital comics. Featuring: critically-acclaimed writer Gabby Rivera (America, Juliet Takes a Breath), satirical cartoonist Joey Alison Sayers (The Nib, Mad Magazine), Inkpot Award-winning artist and writer Phil Jimenez (Wonder Woman, Infinite Crisis), and our very own graduate cartoonists! Gabby Rivera: Friday, July 12th, 7pm, 195 De Haro, San Francisco
Gabby Rivera is the author of America, the debut solo series for America Chavez, Marvel’s first queer Latina superhero. Rivera’s critically acclaimed debut novel Juliet Takes a Breath was called “f*cking outstanding” by Roxane Gay and will be published in hardcover for the first time in fall 2019. Gabby has also written in the Lumberjanes universe for Boom! Studios. Her latest short story O.1 can be found in Victor LaValle’s recent anthology A People’s Future of the United States.

Joey Alison Sayers: Friday, July 19th, 7pm, CCA Writers Studio, 350 Kansas Street, San Francisco
Joey Alison Sayers is a cartoonist living in Oakland, CA. Her comics have appeared in The Nib, Mad Magazine, numerous alternative newsweeklies, and the Best American Comics anthology. From the Sayers’ comic strip collections, Teen Power and Stupid Dreams, to her memoir comics, Just So You Know, tackles modern life with sharp wit and meticulous comedic timing. Recently, Joey Alison was named the new writer for the long-running, syndicated comic Alley Oop.

Note: Joey Alison’s talk will be followed by an opening reception for CCA’s annual Emanata Graduate Comics Gallery Exhibition.

Phil Jimenez: Friday, July 26th, 7pm, 350 Kansas Street, San Francisco
Phil Jimenez is a critically-acclaimed artist and writer for Marvel and DC Comics. Know for his work on Wonder Woman, Infinite Crisis, New X-Men, and The Invisibles, Jimenez is a fan favorite throughout the industry. In addition to writing and illustrating comics, Phil Jimenez has taught in the CCA MFA in Comics program as well as life drawing at the School of Visual Arts where he once studied.
