A new, live-action Mortal Kombat film is in development by New Line Cinema with pre-production set to begin later this month. First reported by Variety, it will be directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan.

Pre-production was announced by South Australia’s Premier Steven Marshall, as the film will be made primarily in that area.

Mortal Kombat will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses,” said Marshall. “The state government’s investment in Mortal Kombat will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post production capabilities, bringing the promise of fantastic new jobs for the local film industry.”

Mortal Kombat is reportedly expected to inject $49 million in the South Australian economy, create 580 jobs, and employ 1,500 extras.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan said.

New Line hasn’t specified if this will be a continuation of the previous two films, or a reboot.

A release date has not been set by New Line.
