GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s Real ROCKET RACCOON Passes Away

Mr. Oreo Raccoon, the physical inspiration, model, and occasional stand-in for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Rocket has passed away at the age of nine following a brief illness, according to a Facebook post from Oreo’s handlers Quinta Layla.

Oreo was adopted into show business from an early age, chosen from his litter to be an actor because he was the quickest to learn to take a bottle when his mother failed to produce milk. From there, Oreo became the inspiration for the most famous raccoon in pop culture (sorry Ranger Rick), the movie version of Rocket.

In addition to life on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Oreo was a companion to the cast and crew, even accompanying writer and director James Gunn to the Guardians red carpet premiere event in 2014.

“Oreo you made so many people’s lives happy. You have been an amazing ambassador for raccoons everywhere,” reads Quinta Layla’s post in remembrance of Oreo. “You loved all people of all ages and other animals too and were never phased by anything be it a walk down the red carpet as Rocket Raccoon, a trip to a hospice to visit a sick child or anything else that came your way. You just enjoyed everything and it showed.”
