WILDSTORM & CROSSGEN Alum James Rochelle Dies at 48

Colorist James Rochelle died on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the age of 48. Rochelle worked as a colorist for 25 years, debuting in the industry with 1994’s Gen13 #1, with multi-year stints at WildStorm, CrossGen Comics, as well as working freelance.

“Saddened to hear of the unexpected passing of WildStorm alum color artist James Rochelle,” tweeted DC CCO/Publisher Jim Lee, founder of WildStorm. “As gifted as he was good natured, kind and brilliant – James was one of the great colorists who defined the look of our studio.  No job could properly contain his many talents. RIP, buddy.”

Rochelle entered the comic book industry in 1994 after receiving an Associate of Applied Arts degree from the Art Institute of Seattle. He was hired by WildStorm in 1994 to work out of the company’a La Jolla offices, working for three years on titles such as Gen13, Backlash/Spider-Man, and Batman: Dark Knight Dynasty. He left in 1997 to begin what became a secondary career as a texture/shading artist in the video game industry.

Rochelle moonlighted as a colorist from 1997 to 2001, working on titles such as Strangers in Paradise, Mage: The Hero Discovered, and Steampunk. In 2001, Rochelle rejoined the comic book industry on a full-time basis at the Tampa-based CrossGen Comics. While there, he colored Negation, Route 666, and Forge.

In 2004, Rochelle returned to the game industry by taking a Lead Artist role at Sony Entertainment Online – a position he worked at until 2013. While there, he continued to moonlight as a colorist on titles such as Spider-Man/Doctor Octopus: Out of Reach, Target X-Men Encyclopedia, Tales of the Fear Agent, and End League.
