Moon Knight Subtly Sets up Jake Lockley

The following article contains spoilers for Moon Knight Season 1, Episode 1, “The Goldfish Problem,” and Episode 2, “Summon the Suit,” available now on Disney+.

Episode 2 of Moon Knight ends with the titular hero swigging a bottle of booze in a Cairo hostel, and his demeanor during this scene is causing fans to speculate that Episode 3 will reveal that Jake Lockley is now behind the wheel. There are some subtle clues within the first two episodes that potentially indicate Lockley has been around the whole time.

Jake Lockley is the third persona of Moon Knight/Marc Spector and is the rough and tough cabbie that acts as the intel gatherer for many of Moon Knight’s missions. In comparison to Marc and Steven, Jake is much gritter and less honor-bound since he is the connection Moon Knight needs to the criminal underworld. In the comics, Lockley creates a network of spies and informants to help Moon Knight keep the upper hand over his enemies and rogues gallery. As for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jake could possibly be the one that has been living moments of Steven’s life and not Marc.

First and foremost, each episode of Moon Knight thus far features an end credit sequence that shows Oscar Issac’s face expanding out into three separate and identical faces, which could be representing the three personas. Both episodes also play quite a bit with reflections in order to show the distinctions in personalities, and there are a couple key moments in Episode 2 where we can see three reflections clearly. Another big clue drop comes in Episode 2 when Layla is getting annoyed with Marc/Steven and asks, “Is this one of your latest identities?,” which indicates this is not the first time Layla has encountered another persona of Moon Knight.

Jake Lockley is also much more of a charming, everyman than either Steven or Marc, so it would make much more sense if it ends up that Lockley asked out the tour guide from the museum and not Marc during Episode 1. Steven is way too shy to have done this and has no recollection of asking, while Episode 2 makes it clear that Marc cares deeply for Layla, so it doesn’t make sense for Marc to have asked either. Lockley has his own romantic relationships in the comics and even has a child with Steven/Marc’s wife Marlene without either of them knowing, so this attempt at a date within the show would be in line with Lockley’s character.

Then there is the final scene of Episode 2 where we see a reflection in a cracked mirror of Marc (or Steven) sitting on the edge of the bed before the frame pans out, and we actually see him instead sitting on the floor with a bottle of booze. While it could easily be said that Marc is the one drinking in the room, the reflection in the mirror feels much different from Steven and how he is depicted in the church mirror. The person in the hotel mirror looks concerned, but is more stoic than outright fearful. We also learn during Episode 2 that Khonshu is eyeing Layla as a potential avatar and the deity holds that over Marc’s head in order to keep him honor bound, so letting Jake take the wheel could be Marc’s way of sticking it to Khonshu.

There are many potential signs from Episodes 1 and 2 that point to the Jake Lockley persona making a grand entrance very soon, but just like everything with Moon Knight nothing is what it seems to be. It will be fascinating to see who is behind the wheel of the body when Episode 3 debuts next Wednesday.

The first two episodes of Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight is streaming now on Disney+, with new episodes weekly through Wednesday, May 4.
