Star Wars‘ highly anticipated upcoming series Ahsoka has tapped Peter Ramsey, co-director of Sony’s animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the number of episodes Ramsey will direct has yet to be determined, but he will helm at least one. Ahsoka is set to begin filming later in April.
Ramsey directed 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse alongside Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman. He also helmed 2012’s Rise of the Guardians and a number of episodes of animated series such as Netflix’s We the People. Ahsoka marks his first foray into live-action directing since serving as a second unit director on such ’90s films as Godzilla and Tank Girl.
The director also boasts two big firsts for Hollywood — he was the first African American to direct a major animated feature with Rise of the Guardians and subsequently became the first African American to be nominated for and win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (Spider-Verse in 2019).
Ahsoka will follow the continuing adventures of Rosario Dawson’s Jedi, first introduced in the 2008 Clone Wars animated film as a 14-year-old padawan to Anakin Skywalker. She was originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein, who also helped to develop the character. Dawson brought Ahsoka to live action for the first time in The Mandalorian Season 2 episode “The Jedi” and later appeared in The Book of Boba Fett as well.
Written by Dave Filoni and produced by Filoni and Jon Favreau, Ahsoka will premiere on Disney+ at a currently unspecified date.
