WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Halo Season 1, Episode 3, “Emergence,” streaming now on Paramount+.After stumbling across a Forerunner artifact on the frontier world of Madrigal, Master Chief began to receive memories of his past from before he was labeled as John-117 by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). This led him to go rogue and spare the life of young rebel Kwan Ha, entrusting her to the care of his old friend Soren-066 before returning to face UNSC authority. And as Dr. Catherine Halsey prepares to pair Master Chief with the advanced artificial intelligence program Cortana, the insidious Covenant are ready to go on the offensive once again as Halo continues.
The planet Oban is a UNSC wasteland, with those living on the surface forced to scrounge through the garbage dumped by UNSC dropships. As a young girl is beaten and burned by a guard, the Covenant strike and decide to take her with them back to their vessel. Years later, the girl is revealed to be Makee, the human member of the Covenant who advises the elders. She vows to recover the relic — and Master Chief’s head — for the extraterrestrial civilization before she ambushes a UNSC vessel.
While Miranda Keyes begins studying the Forerunner artifact, Halsey completes the process to create the artificial intelligence Cortana. The nightmarish process involves transferring her cloned self’s consciousness into a neurological implant, killing the clone in the process before Master Chief has Cortana forcibly inserted in his mind. Speaking with Cortana for the first time, Halsey is impressed by her creation… though Cortana is confused that she cannot assume total control of John-117, as was intended.
John admits to Cortana that he felt emotions for the first time in years after coming into contact with the relic and would like to continue this self-discovery. Cortana instructs John on removing the emotional inhibitor chip implanted in his body by the Spartan program, allowing him to travel around the potentallly doomed planet Reach and genuinely witness the beauty of the culture for the first time. The experience motivates John to break into UNSC facilities to access the artifact again, with Halsey quietly giving Cortana her tacit approval to help him.
After touching the relic, John receives another vision from his childhood and is able to deduce where his home was. He is upset to learn the planet was quarantined after being stricken by a strange contagion, leading to his adoption into the Spartan program from an early age. More intriguingly, John realizes that he encountered a similar artifact on the planet as a boy, prompting him to leave Reach and investigate — with Halsey accompanying him.
Elsewhere in the world of Halo, Kwan is concerned by the rise of Vinsher Grath, who has taken over the resistance and is executing anyone who questions his authority. Soren firmly shuts down any notion of Kwan returning to the planet Madrigal to stop Vinsher, but she continues to plan to return home anyway; when he realizes she won’t be stopped, Soren begrudgingly agrees to join her. This comes as Makee plans to lead a Covenant expedition to Madrigal, setting up a showdown back where the series began.
Developed for television by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane, Halo releases new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.
