Disenchantment’s Major Part 4 Reveal Wasn’t Surprising | CBR

The winding path called Disenchanment has proven to be filled with twists and turns. Every episode adds another piece to an intricate puzzle, often showing fans just how much of the story has yet to be told. But one major Part 4 reveal was absolutely obvious to all the fans watching the series. And if they hadn’t figured out that Elves and Trøgs were the same things already, their minds must have been absolutely blown.

In addition to humans, one of the key races in the series is Elves. Unlike the Elves of The Lord of the Rings, these are not mystical warriors with superhuman abilities and unnaturally long lives. No, the Elves of Disenchantment are tiny, multicolored beings who live in a secret kingdom and make candy all day. It soon became clear that there was much more to them than that description, however.

As the series has gone on, it has become increasingly clear that the secret history of the Elves runs deep in the very foundations of Dreamland. In fact, Bean’s ancestors straight up stole Dreamland from them and the Elves want it back. This became a running theme in Part 4 as Bean tried to atone for the sins of her family and came up short, in part opening the door for Dagmar to take the throne for herself.

But there were other races in the mix in this situation, specifically the Trøgs. Originally under the thrall of Dagmar, the Trøgs made their debut in Part 2, Episode 10. These subterranean creatures quite literally lived under Dreamland in secret. They were specifically acclimatized to this unique environment with a variant version of them living underwater just off the coast of the kingdom.

It was obvious from moment one that these creatures were some sort of evolutionary offshoot of Elves. Yet, the Elves and the Trøgs seemed completely oblivious to this highly apparent fact. Even outsiders like Bean did not pick up on this connection between the two races, one that was almost impossible to ignore. As it turned out, the Elves and Trøgs were even closer than anyone suspected.

In Part 4, Episode 9, Elfo came to the realization that Elves and Trøgs were the same beings. Trøgs were Elves who ingested some strange, underground goo that turned them into the dank dwelling creatures fans had come to know and love. This realization will likely play a much bigger part in the evolving story, though that will depend on a lot of factors. Maru seemed like it should have been a much bigger deal at first and look how that turned out.

It still doesn’t add up that no one understood that Elves and the Trøgs were essentially the same creatures. Trøgs look just like Elves who haven’t seen the Sun in their entire lives. How everyone on the show didn’t put it together immediately was beyond confusing. The second Bean and her friends saw the Trøgs in Part 2, they should have identified them as Elves of some kind. Yet, they all thought this was a major revelation. They might not be the brightest bunch.
