James Gunn Teases Special GotGv3 Cameos for ‘True Guardians Fans’

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer-director James Gunn says “true Guardians fans” can expect some “wonderful” cameos in the upcoming Marvel Studios film.

On Twitter, Gunn shared a photo from the set of Guardians 3, revealing the latest piece of Rick and Morty memorabilia to be put on his video cart. “Day 29. The Space Cruiser, Rick & Morty’s ship. It lights up. The cart is getting crowded,” he wrote. “PS Today we are shooting some wonderful cameos for true Guardians fans. #GotGVol3 #RickandMorty.”

During a previous update regarding the Rick and Morty merchandise being delivered to his cart by an unknown benefactor, Gunn revealed that there is an actor involved in Guardians 3 that fans are not yet aware of. “So I thought there was no figure today, but [one] of our actors (who people don’t know is in the movie), sidestepped in front of me with his back hidden [and] put Rick King of Shit on the cart. So is [REDACTED] behind it all? Unlikely but possible.”

Still, it remains to be seen what sort of surprise cameos Gunn and the Guardians crew have up their sleeve. However, the fact that these cameos are for “true Guardians fans” is certainly interesting, and implies that the film could feature some deep-cut characters from the original Marvel comic books.

Gunn’s original Guardians of the Galaxy film from 2014 turned a team of rather obscure Marvel heroes into cinematic stars. Notably, though, the version of the team featured in the film was inspired by Marvel Comics’ 2008 incarnation of the Guardians — not the original 1969 incarnation. There have been other incarnations of the team as well. So, while nothing is confirmed, it seems like more characters from Guardians history could be coming to the big screen.

Numerous members of the original Guardians team did make cameos in Gunn’s 2017 film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, including Martinex (Michael Rosenbaum), Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Starhawk (Sylvester Stallone) and Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh). And, of course, original Guardian Yondu (Michael Rooker) was featured prominently in both of Gunn’s Guardians films this far.

Guardians 3 sees franchise stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Sean Gunn reprise their roles as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Nebula, Mantis and Kraglin Obfonteri, respectively. The threequel also features a major newcomer in the form of Will Poulter, who plays Adam Warlock. Additionally, Stallone reprises his role as Starhawk from Guardians 2, while Peacemaker star Chukwudi Iwuji has been cast in an undisclosed role.
