The Soulslike games made by FromSoftware have many properties that help define them. One of these traits is obscure puzzles players need to complete to acquire loot, reach areas and defeat bosses. In Elden Ring, Sellia, Town of Sorcery, is one giant puzzle.
Early on, as many players explore the vast world of Elden Ring, they may happen upon the teleporter trap that brings them to the Swamp of Aeonia in the heart of Caelid. If players choose to wander the area for a bit, they are likely to come across Sellia, Town of Sorcery. Within the town are ghost-like enemies and a handful of magic barriers with no way to initially interact with them. This has left many players stumped as to how to progress through the area and continue certain NPC quests.
One can obtain information on how to unlock the secrets of Sellia from Sage Gowry, south of the town. He will ask the player to retrieve the Unalloyed Gold Needle from the boss at the Heart of Aeonia. While this is the intended way for players to gain access, as it progresses Millicent’s questline, it is unnecessary for unlocking Sellia itself. To unlock all of the barriers in Sellia, players must light the flame atop three towers scattered around the town despite there being no obvious ways to climb them. Each tower links to specific barriers within the town. It is also possible to use Torrent and his double jump to help with the platforming throughout the puzzle.
The first torch is the most straightforward. Players must make their way to the topmost area of Sellia at the large barrier next to the golden tree. Hop off the ledge onto the root growing out of the ground to the Southwest. Then the players must traverse the root until they’re near the end before hopping onto the growth on the side of the tower. From there it is possible to climb the ladder and light the flame, unlocking the seal directly to the north, which leads to a boss battle with the Nox Swordstress and Nox Priest, who guard Lusat’s Glintstone Staff and drop the Nox Flowing Sword.
Players can approach the next two torches from the same direction. Return back to the same seal as before, but instead of heading all the way up the stairs to it, jump off onto the root halfway up the staircase. Jump from the root to the connected roof, and then follow the next root to the next roof. From there, players must jump to the next roof with a root growing along the right side. Use this as a pathway to the top of the roof where one will encounter a Marionette Soldier that can either be defeated or avoided. Players then need to hop off the roof onto the large root with an Ash of War Scarab on it, traversing it to the adjacent roof. Players can then climb to the large spiraling roof at the precipice of the building.
Now players have access to the final two torches. First, head west along the rooftops towards the ladder. Climb it and light the second torch. This will break the seals down in the town itself, which hide three chests that contain an Imbued Sword Key, a Spelldrake Talisman +1, and the spell Night Comet. Then head back to the spiral root again, this time climbing it and hopping off at the tower, where the final torch can be lit, breaking the large seal at the top of Sellia. This seal leads to the Sellia Backstreets and other areas, such as the Church of the Plague where Millicent resides. If one continues north, past the cemetery, they can also find the Sellia Hideaway dungeon behind an illusory stone wall.
