10 Times Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Changed The Manga | CBR

The Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0 manga distinguished itself from the events of the anime series with its content and its characters. When Gojo, Maki, and Panda made their return in the new film, series staples like Yuji and Sukuna are replaced by Yuta and Suguru.

The cast of Volume 0 was written by Gege Akutami as the original inhabitants of the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. As the series progressed and made its way into the world of anime, Volume 0 evolved into something much more than the manga that inspired it.

10 Miguel Holds Gojo In Shinjuku For An Epic Battle

Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0 is a film about Yuta Okkotsu and Suguru Geto, but that doesn’t stop Gojo from making an impact. The goofy and overpowered sensei has been a staple of the anime genre since the second episode of Jujutsu Kaisen dropped in Fall 2020.

Satoru Gojo spends the majority of his time in the new film sticking his neck out for his new student, but when an army of cursed spirits is unleashed on Japan, he steps up to face a powerful foreign sorcerer named Miguel. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 dedicates more time to this action sequence than the manga, allowing viewers to see Miguel’s skills.

9 Miguel’s Voice Is Silenced In Order To Build Gojo Up As A Hero

Miguel’s overconfident personality pops up in the manga when he challenges Gojo to a battle in Shinjuku. Unfortunately, this quip is removed from the anime film to give Gojo the chance to look like a hero.

Before Miguel is able to challenge Gojo in the film, the overpowered sensei acknowledges the strength of the African sorcerer and stays in Shinjuku just long enough to defeat him. This moment allowed Gojo the chance to shine at the expense of Miguel’s personal expression.

8 Todo Faces Off Against A Special Grade Cursed Spirit On His Own

Todo from Jujutsu Kaisen

If fans were to look at the Volume 0 manga for reference they would find that Aoi Todo was never meant to make an appearance in Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0. Fortunately, after winning over the hearts of fans with his powerful cursed technique and boisterous personality, MAPPA made the decision to bring him back.

Todo’s screen time in the film may be limited, but it hints at the special grade encounter that viewers heard rumors of during the Kyoto Goodwill Exchange Event. It also gave Todo the chance to express his adoration of Takada-chan in front of the camera again.

7 Kamo, Mai, Miwa, & The Rest Of Kyoto’s Students Make A Cameo

Suguru Geto’s plan to unleash cursed spirits throughout Kyoto and Shinjuku is a canonical part of both the manga and the film. His plan may have been a bluff, but it left a lasting impact on the jujutsu world.

Both the manga and film spend time detailing Geto’s attack in Tokyo, but only the film takes the time to show the impact of the Night Parade of 100 Demons on the small city of Kyoto. Instead of focusing entirely on Gojo’s point of view in Shinjuku, the film pans over to Kyoto to give the students at Kyoto Jujutsu High the chance to shine.

6 Mei Mei Can Be Seen Cutting Up Cursed Spirits During The Night Parade Of 100 Demons

The Night Parade of 100 Demons was never intended to be anything more than an elaborate feint. The manga makes this clear by cutting back to Shinjuku only to show fans why Gojo wasn’t able to stop Suguru Geto from attacking his students.

Unlike the manga, the film takes a minute to add context to the battle between Cursed Spirit and jujutsu sorcerer in Shinjuku. One of the sorcerers that made a cameo during this minute is the money-hungry sorcerer Mei Mei.

5 Kento Nanami Makes A Short Cameo In The New Film

Kento Nanami played a big role in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime by mentoring Yuji through his battle with Junpei and Mahito. Though he never appeared in the Volume 0 manga, he returned for the new Jujutsu Kaisen film to defend Japan during the Night Parade of 100 Demons.

Nanami’s cameo is short, but it gives fans a chance to see the sorcerer in action one more time. The film even shows Takuma Ino fighting alongside Nanami to add depth to their relationship.

4 Fans Get To See Shoko In Action

Shoko Leiri is given very little time to shine in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. As the foundation of the jujutsu world’s medical team, it’s a genuine shame that Shoko doesn’t earn more respect from Gege Akutami.

Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 0 aims to correct this mistake by showing Shoko struggling to keep up with the damage done to the jujutsu world by the Night Parade of 100 Demons. This shot helps explain Shoko’s role as a sorcerer and demonstrates exactly how overworked the young woman really is.

3 Volume 0 Jumps Right Into Yuta’s Life To Avoid Mimicking The Anime Series

Yuta & Rika _ Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Chapter 0.1

The opening sequence of the Volume 0 film showed Yuta being confronted by a group of bullies at his former high school. The gruesome scene is difficult to watch thanks to MAPPA’s close attention to color and detail.

The original opener to Volume 0 showed Yuta sitting in a jujutsu containment cell. Instead of mirroring the manga and plotting the new film in the same way the anime series began, MAPPA decided to skip the first shot of Yuta sitting in his cell and jump straight into the action.

2 Geto’s Explanation Of Rika’s Power Is Removed From The Film

Cursed Energy and the accumulative energy that forms the intelligence of a Cursed Spirit are two of the most complicated and confusing aspects of Jujutsu Kaisen. Like the Nen power system in Hunter X Hunter, information on Cursed Energy is so rare that fans are willing to scour the pages of every manga chapter to make sense of it.

One of the most important pieces of information that comes out of Volume 0 is tied to the Cursed Spirit known as Rika and spoken by Suguru Geto: “Surreal. A spirit of endless cursed energy.” If this manga-exclusive quote is true, Yuta and Rika are even more overpowered than fans have given him credit for.

1 Gojo’s Dialogue Is Changed For The Film

10 Best Things About Satoru Gojo

Gojo makes his presence known in the Volume 0 film as much as he does in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series. The overpowered sensei has become an icon since Gege Akutami’s manga broke onto the anime scene in the fall of 2020.

Unfortunately, some of Gojo’s better quotes are left out of the Jujutsu Kaiseni Volume 0 film. During his fight with Miguel, MAPPA chose to leave out one of Gojo’s MMA references. Later, when Gojo references Suguru Geto while talking to Yuta, his line is changed to make their relationship seem like nothing more than an old friendship.
