The review embargo has been lifted and Sony’s latest Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, is not scoring well with critics.
According to review aggregate, Rotten Tomatoes, the majority of reviewers do not recommend Morbius. At the time of writing, the site has collected 65 reviews, of which only 13 are considered “fresh” or positive. This leaves 52 that consider the movie to be “rotten,” giving the Living Vampire a disappointing critic score of 20 percent. Many confirm what previous reports suggested– the film failed to impress with its plot and action scenes.
As Morbius isn’t released to the public until April 1, there is no audience score as yet. A low critics score doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie will also be rejected by fans, however. The first of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs, 2018’s Venom, currently has a low critics score of 30 percent but was a hit with the public, as the audience score is 81 percent.
The poor reviews for Morbius shouldn’t come as a surprise to Sony or audiences, as the majority of impressions and comments from early screenings were also widely negative. Several highlighted the “bad plotting” and “visually confusing CGI” as being major points for criticisms. Many also pointed to the confusing and lacklustre post-credits scenes.
Despite the negative reactions and reviews, Morbius is predicted to have a decent opening weekend, with the most recent figures suggesting it might achieve between $40 and $50 million in its first three days. Sony is estimated to have spent around $75 million to produce the film, making it relatively cheap for a super-hero blockbuster. However, the multiple delays to Morbius‘ release is said to have added millions onto that figure as Sony had to pay for each delay.
Alongside the two Venom movies, Morbius is Sony’s attempt at creating a new continuity of Marvel movies set around Spider-Man and his villains. A recent vignette promoting Morbius saw lead actor Jared Leto tease the possible future of the Venom-verse and the addition of more known characters. “In the film version of Morbius, he’s part of a much larger universe. The multiverse has officially opened and there’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up,” Leto said.
One villain that is known to appear in Morbius is Michael Keaton’s Adrian Tooms/Vulture, Vulture first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Morbius director Daniel Espinosa explained Vulture’s appearance by teasing that a Sinister Six movie might be on the cards. “Well, he is recruiting teammates and he has enticed one already. So it sure looks like a start,” Espinosa said.
Morbius arrives in theaters on April 1.
