For decades, Dungeons & Dragons has encouraged players to adventure through both light and darkness — but what about the mysterious transition between the two? Twilight may not last long, but there is incredible power to be found within the fleeting transition between day and night. The Cleric’s Twilight Domain focuses heavily on deities that exist within the confines of that transformation and transformation should play an important role in the power they display.
Building a powerful Twilight Domain Cleric requires careful consideration. The right stat focuses, racial attributes, feats, and spells not only ensure a powerful Cleric, but add ambience to the character’s portrayal as well.
Wisdom Is a Twilight Domain Cleric’s Most Important Stat
Clerics draw power from the deity they worship, which manifests in the abilities granted by their Divine Domain. Since Clerics need to be wise beyond their years to understand the bond they draw power from, Wisdom is their primary stat. This influences important skills like Medicine, Survival, Insight, Perception and Animal Handling, as well as their spellcasting abilities, spellcasting modifier, spell attack bonus, and spell save DC.
Secondary to Wisdom, Clerics must have a hearty Constitution. CON contributes to the Cleric’s pool of hit points and determines how well they maintain concentration on spells when they take damage. Finding ways to improve CON will not only ensure the Cleric can withstand damage, exhaustion, and poisoning, but it also takes a little bit of pressure off the rest of the party, who may feel their only chance at survival is to protect the Cleric at all costs.
After WIS and CON, determining the types of physical attacks the Twilight Domain Cleric will make will dictate whether or not they should focus on Strength or Dexterity. Heavy hitters who want to pack a powerful punch and don heavy armor will need to boost their STR score, while the more agile Cleric with a penchant for light to medium armor and finesse weapons should choose DEX. It also doesn’t hurt to pour a little bit into Intelligence, which will work hand in hand with the street smarts that come with WIS and provide a leg up on useful skills like Religion, Arcana, History, Investigation and Nature.
The Best Races for a Twilight Domain Cleric
Choosing the right race for an ideal character build means reviewing the stat boosts provided during character creation and analyzing any racial traits that might complement the Cleric’s strengths. For example, the Firbolg provides players with a +2 WIS increase and a +1 STR boost. Firbolgs also have access to some unique magic that works well with the Twilight Domain, like Hidden Step, which allows them to become temporarily invisible to move undetected. Firbolg Magic grants them the ability to cast Detect Magic and Disguise Self once per day without use of a spell slot. They also have the unique but limited ability to speak with beasts and plants, gaining advantage on Charisma checks to win them over to their favor.
The Water Genasi is also another great choice because they get +2 CON and +1 WIS. They are resistant to acid damage and can breathe both air and water. Additionally, they have a swim speed of 30 feet, which can come in handy if the rest of the party needs to explore underwater areas. It’s important to take a look at attributes beyond the stat increases because there may be unique abilities that make up for the lack of stat boosts.
Best Feats for the Twilight Domain Cleric
The Durable feat is helpful for Clerics because it provides them with some much-needed extra hit points each time they level up, in addition to a +1 CON increase. Tough also provides +2 hit points for each character level. Both of these help take some of the pressure off the rest of the party to protect the Cleric because they will have a slightly heartier constitution overall.
War Caster is another essential feat for the Twilight Domain Cleric, as it allows them to cast spells without using somatic components. This allows them to hold onto their shield and weapon while casting important magic to keep everyone up and moving through combat. War Caster also grants the Cleric advantage on CON saves to maintain concentration on ongoing magical effects that could very well be keeping everyone alive.
Best Spells for the Twilight Domain Cleric
Clerics choose and prepare their spells at the start of each new day, save for spells that are always prepared. That means they have access to all spells a Cleric can cast within their level, but it’s important to think both aesthetically and practically when choosing spells for the day. Spells that draw on the power of transition (like the cantrips Guidance, Thaumaturgy, and Toll the Dead) are great options.
Detect Evil and Good, as well as Detect Magic, lend an air of mystery, as the Cleric reaches beyond themselves to find sources unseen to others. Protective spells like Sanctuary and Shield of Faith lend power to the deity, and describing their appearance can go a long way toward convincing others of the bond shared with their god. As they advance in power, magic like Find the Path or Planeshift demonstrate the Cleric’s power to transition much the same way day transitions into night.
