With Endwalker wrapping up Final Fantasy XIV‘s near-decade-long story, many players are wondering just where the game will take their Warrior of Light next. The game’s director Naoki Yoshida, also known as “Yoshi-P,” has said he wants to continue working on FFXIV for another 10 years, so there will be plenty of more stories unfolding. However, not much is known about where the game will go next. Thankfully, in-game cues toward the end of Endwalker, along with some patch notes for April’s 6.1 update, may point to where the next journey will take players.
One of the main changes is that the Warrior of Light will go back to being known as an adventurer. They won’t be doing any wildly heroic feats for a while, so it makes sense to return to the character’s roots. The Scions also expressed that they will be parting ways to go on their own journeys at the conclusion of Endwalker, leaving the WoL to decide what to do for themselves. The world is a big place and there is much to explore.
Exactly what the next story will explore has been the subject of many player theories. Fans have particularly focused on the final parting words of Emet-Selch, a helpful villain, who mentions a number of places around the world that he and his fellow Ascians have likely traveled to over their long life spans. While most of these places actually appear on the world map as well, he only hints as to what may lie in some of them.
The treasure islands beyond Blindfrost’s waters may tie into 6.2’s planned Island Sanctuaries. Ruins beneath the Bounty Sea may turn out to be an old civilization to explore. Then, there are the “fabled golden cities of the New World” and a southern continent called Meracydia with its own nations. These seem like obvious choices for the hero and Scions to explore next as part of the main story, especially if there is an entire new continent to explore.
For a while, many fans also focused on a specific line about the Twelve, Eorzea’s deities, which is now confirmed to be new content. A new Alliance Raid called Myths of the Realm will revolve around the truth of the deities. It will be interesting to see where this trail goes, even if Alliance Raids are traditionally Side Stories. There will also be a continuation of the Pandæmonium raid with the rest of the floors, which will likely bring a conclusion to Lahabrea’s story. There are a lot of directions for new adventures, and it will be great to see where Yoshi-P takes FFXIV next.
