New images from Top: Gun Maverick offer a new look at Miles Teller’s Rooster.
New images from Top Gun: Maverick were shared in an issue of Total Film magazine, which featured Tom Cruise’s titular Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as well as a fresh look at Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, portrayed by Anthony Edwards in the original 1986 Top Gun.
Top Gun celebrated its 35th-anniversary in 2021. Paramount’s upcoming sequel will see Cruise and Val Kilmer reprise their respective roles as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his rival, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky from the original 1986 film. Top Gun: Maverick will also star Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm. First announced in 2017, the last teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, was released in 2019 and saw Cruise return to the cockpit in a teaching role.
While not much is known about the plot, it was revealed that the film used hundreds of real pilots as extras, many of whom were inspired to fly planes because of the original Top Gun movie. “They were coming up to us and telling us that the first Top Gun film inspired them to join the Navy and the Air Force,” Jack Kilmer, son of “Iceman” actor Val Kilmer, said at the time. “Then we had these big F-bomb planes flying overhead. It was like one of the proudest moments of being American that you could think of really.”
Top Gun: Maverick is among several films on Paramount Pictures’ release schedule, including Mission: Impossible 7 and 8, the latter of which is reportedly being “held hostage” by Cruise. There were also plans to film Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 back-t0-back in 2021, though those plans were scrapped due to scheduling conflicts with the Top Gun sequel, which has seen its release date delayed several times as a result of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The sequel is now expected to premiere in theaters in May 2023.
“By far, we have one of the strongest slates of anyone rolling out in the next 12 to 24 months,” said Brian Robbins, President and CEO of Paramount Pictures. “And I’m looking forward to discussing how we’re going to maximize its impact and keep building for the future.” An insider added that all of the movies on the Paramount slate “are meant to be seen on the big screen” and noted that Robbins is “determined to make sure people experience them that way.”
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer, Top Gun: Maverick is set for release on May 27, 2022.
